In keeping with the new naming conventions of System 7, I have renamed the
"init" directory to be "ex" (for extension) and the "cdev" directory
to "cp" (for control panel). I chose these names because they were short
and no more cryptic than before.

Subject: [*] MicroBArtenter 2.1

Here is the official release of MicroBArtender version 2.1.

Improvements over MicroBArtender 1.0

- tape recorder like browsing controls, nicer than before
- context search, select a search key and cross reference all other
  cards with the same word
- tools including measurements, substitutes and glossary information,
list of drinks, suggestions of drinks to make based on stocking
  information, recipe printing

...and yes, you can enter your own drinks or modify existing cards

Revisions in MicroBArtender version 2.1 from 2.0
- MB2.1 works with HyperCard 2.0. MB2.0 should be used by
those who stick with HyperCard 1.2.

Future

- MicroBArtender is being ported to the Apple // GS
- look for recipe update 2 some time in November!

I'd like to thank Dave Garman for allowing me to include
his "The College Student's Official Bartender's Guide", and Shane
Zatezalo for his personal collection. MicroBArtender knows over 750
drinks, but the release only comes with 101. There is a $10US
registration fee for the entire, growing recipe collection.

If you have special recipes you'd like to see included in future
releases of the MicroBArtender, please send them to me!
(Beware, you agree to give me unconditional use of said recipes and
they should not be copyrighted.)

I was very surprised to see the recent post of the After Dark Gengi module to
this board a few days ago. I had written a Neko module for After Dark, also,
and I too was waiting for permission to use the graphics.
So here is my module. It has four parameters - Cats (1-10), Mice (0-10), and
'smart cats' and 'smart prey.' The Smart options let the cats chase the mice
and the prey run from the cats.
Just in case anyone is interested, the source code and japanese comments for
the Xwindows version are available under anonymous FTP from jyu.fi. If anyone
knows of an FTP site in the US with them, let me know.
I hope you all enjoy this. Comments and ideas are always welcome.

Hi MacFolks!

Since I published the Telex network utility three months
ago, I've received a lot of requests for the source codes. And
nobody has suggested me anything interesting as a payment. It's
a pity! But there are too many asks for the source code, that
now it's cheaper for me to publish it than to read all this

to comment them (in MY English, sorry), and I hope that it helps
anybody...

Joel Levin writes that he is using an old freeware version of Boomerang and he
is happy with it. Fine, Mr. Levin, but I fail to see the relevance of your
statement regarding the earlier posting. Chuq was not flaming you - he was
flaming someone who was using the SHAREWARE version of Boomerang and was now
complaining that the author of the shareware version wasn't releasing a System
7 compatible version of that old piece of sofware.

All of what Chuq said is true - registered users of shareware boomerang were
sent (free) a copy of the commercial version (SuperBoomerang). We were also
given an opportunity to buy the complete NOW Utilities package at a very
attractive price. Furthermore, in the past week, and updater has been made
available which fixes some of the cosmetic glitches SuperBoomerang encounters
when run under System 7. A fully-System7 compliant version of the entire NOW
package, including SuperBoomerang, is promised for the near future.

I, for one, think that's pretty fine support, and have no patience with those
who couldn't be bothered to register.

As far as you are concerned, Mr. Levin, I don't know what you will do when
(if) you upgrade to System 7, but I'm sure you will have the common sense to
not complain that a two year old freeware package no longer works. Perhaps you
should just be a little bit less sensitive to flames which aren't headed in
your direction.

I'm looking for a program that maintains a genealogical database and prints
(and hopefully previews) family trees. I've examined both MacRoots and
Personal Ancestry File, and found they don't produce the kind of output I'm
looking for. MR and PAF will print the tree of ancestors of a given person
(plus maybe that person's siblings). I'm looking for something that will also
print nephews, cousins twice removed, great-uncles, and so on. In other words,
I want to be able to show all the people (and their relationships) in the
database, not just the i-th order parents of a given person. Are there any
such programs?

>1. Switching disks used to be a one-step operation on 6.0.7. Now it

It was only a one-step operation if you had only two disks to choose from. If
you have 5 or 6 servers on a network connected it is a much shorter operation
now than stepping through them all used to be.

>2. Switching applications used to be a one-step operation. Now it is

There is an extension available to make this work like it used to. It was on
CompuServe and is probably here, or will be soon.

Ditto number 2 above.

Can't address this one, I don't have an Imagewriter...

Why? 2.1 is the standard now, and has all the new AppleEvents stuff. At any
rate, I have used 2.0v2 and even 1.2.5 for brief periods without a problem (turn
the sound off).

>6. Overview won't work with it. ditto.

I don't even know what Overview is... *heh*. But there will probably be an
update soon if it is a commercial package.

Go to the Preferences card (this should be the last card in the stack).
Call up the message box from the Go menu.
Type in "magic" without the quotes and press Return.

That should do it. You can also do it manually by:

Go to the Preferences card.
Call up the message box from the Go menu.
Type in "set the userlevel to 5" without the quotes and press Return.
Select the button tool.
Select one of the two big buttons covering up the top part of the card.
Press delete.
Select the other big button.
Press delete.

You should be in business.

Subject: Icon Customizing

Letting users customize icons in System 7 will be quite a pain for
system administrators, since we will no longer be able to easily tell
folders from applications from documents.

It would be helpful to have a way to either temporarily or permanently
cause the Finder to revert back to displaying the original icons for all
files on a given disk.

It would be greatly appreciated if someone could write such a utility,
or if a switch of some sort could be incorporated into some future
release of the System software.

Hi Mac Gamers,

Looks like our problems are soon to be over. These recently happened:

1. Dynamix advertised in MacWeek about three weeks ago for Macintosh
programmers. This is the company that brought us Stellar7, Red
Baron, etc etc for the PC in 320x200x256 colors.

2. The June issue of Computer Gaming World, the leading games
magazine, has nothing but praise for Apple. The 1991 Computer
Gaming Conference was hosted by Apple!!! And the recent
meeting of the Software Publishers Association talked about
the Mac being the natural next-step for porting PC games.
Ughh! A port, but much better than nothing.

Now can we have a cheap 'C' compiler for the Mac such as Turbo C?

Or, just take any small magnet from Radio Shack, your fridge, etc,
and poster-tack it to the sensor. That's how I use the ThunderScan.
The cover is a bit hard to get back on, so I just leave it off.
Cost - magnet - $0.00 - took it from one of the little flower
       magnets on the fridge.
       poster-tack - $0.99 from the store, used about 1/100th
of the package = 1 penny.

2) Someone was amazed that the SyleWriter has an expected
life of 6000 pages. Apple confirms this, and it is consistent with
the Cannon BJ-11, which is rated approx 10k pages - perhaps the
graphics overhead for the mac is a bit more than printing from
an IBM.

3) Someone else else writes:
>p.s. Do you have a recommendation on specific hard drive mail-order firm?

Hard Drives International. I have been doing business with them
since before Macs had hard drives, and they are consistently
good with equip. and service. Sometimes an item takes longer
to ship than they say, but that happens to ALL mail order
companies. They ALWAYS honor warranties and 30day MBG with
NO hassle.

Subject: PseudoPS - need some help

Hi net,

perhaps you remember, last week I've posted a message that I'm searching
for PseudoPS. Now --- thanks to James Davis at the University of
California and thanks to "archie" --- I was able to download PseudoPS
once again and now there it is on my hard disk. PseudoPS is indeed what
I had been searching for for a long time: it IS a PostScript previewer
for exactly that subset of commands fitting in my demands.

But: it doesn't run under MultiFinder (it quits unexpectedly after
opening the PostScript file) and it bombs sometimes under Finder
(on a IIci, 8 MB, System 6.0.5). I think this is due to an old
version of the compiler (I haven't found one, but it seems to be
Version 2.1 of LightSpeedC) and don't forget, it has been compiled
1987 and there has been some changes in the Mac world.
As the whole source code of PseudoPS is in the PackIt
archive, I would like to ask these kind souls on the net to recompile this
rather good utility with a higher version of LightSpeedC as I don't have
it, but need PseudoPS. Or even better: upload a new version of PseudoPS
(e.g. with a larger window -- just change some digits in PseudoPS.h).

Any volunteer should drop a message to me and I will be very happy to send
the source code out, as it is no longer available at sumex-aim (I have got
it from Minnehah.rhrk.uni-kl.de (131.246.9.116)).

My memory was faulty. I remembered being told that BITFTP consumes
roughly 30 percent of the CPU cycles of an IBM 3081 at Princeton, but
failed to retain the accompanying information that administrators of
hosts with (relatively) low speed (or expensive - some sites DO have
to pay the phone bills) connections had been emphatic in their objection
to an unrestricted service.

I have had my memory politely corrected by BITFTP's programmer, and I
owe it to her to set the record straight. I continue to marvel at my
alma mater's generosity (30% of a 3081?), for which I am grateful.

BTW. There's a moral here, if YOU are at one of those hosts for which
ftp'ing the 8 MBytes or so of System 7 is likely to cause a problem,
DO communicate with your system administrator about ftp by mail before
the same sort of traffic load, and consequent withdrawl of service befalls

I think I've followed the list traffic long enough now to have concluded
that there are two (entirely legitimate) ways of acquiring System 7 (ok,
I can think of more than two, but the point's still the same)...

1) buy (at dealer or educational prices) the full shrink wrapped package
with pretty Apple brand disk labels, lots of official documentation, and
90 days or telephone hot-line help, or

2) obtain the disks via ftp, user group, or friendly dealer, rely on the
combined expertise of list readership for support (I'd bet that most regular
readers of info-mac wouldn't need to make many of those phone calls anyway :-)
AND buy one of the several(?), well I've heard there are at least two,
"System 7" books that alreay have appeared at B. Dalton and other fine
book stores everywhere (for about 1/3 to 1/4 of the price of option 1?)..

Soo... the obvious question is *which book*?

I'll happily tally votes on this one (don't forget the important stuff,
like author, title, publisher, and price ;-)

pasted into the Scrapbook, the Sound cdev, ResEdit, etc. Notice that when
sounds are pasted into the Sound cdev, it asks you for a name.

Hidden Messages in cdev's:
In the Memory cdev, with Virtual Memory on, hold down option and click where
it has the name of the hard disk. In the Colors cdev, option-click on the
Sample Text a few times. In the Monitors cdev, option-click on the 7.0 in the
upper right corner.

A good place to play with/show off Balloon help is in the Control Panel
devices that came with System 7.

Clicking on the name allows you to change the name. Clicking on the icon
selects it.

You can now move the trash anywhere you want, and it will stay there. You can
also make aliases of the trash.

You can now move the copy dialog box(the one with the thermometer that goes
across) to any place on the desktop. And it will stay there! This is also
true for any of the other thermometer-type dialogs _IN_THE_FINDER_(Empty
Trash, Find).

If you need to find out exactly how much memory an application is taking, turn
on Balloon Help and point at the thermometer in "About This Macintosh."

Subject: system heap

>I assume the new system grew by that much, but my question is this?

The system memory usage in About the Finder is not the size of the system
heap. It is the amount of RAM used by everything that isn't otherwise
accounted for.

If your system usage is 2Mb then it could be your RAM cache is set too high.
Open the Memory control panel and see what the setting is. Also, Macsbug
takes up a considerable amount of RAM, which would also be included in the
system usage number (I think).

Subject: Wanted--removable-cartridge HD experiences

A recent MacWorld article sort of came to the conclusion that the jury
was still out regarding reliability of removable-cartridge drives,
because they haven't been around that long. I'd like to hear people's
experiences with them, now that it's a few months later.

If you have a removable-cartridge HD, please drop me a short note.
Please include: the company you bought it from, how you bought it
(mail-order or dealer), and when you bought it. Let me know if you've
had any problems. Let me know, too, if you haven't; I'm not just
looking for horror stories. Please send only first-hand information
(stories about crashes get passed around; stories about reliable drives
don't).

I will of course summarize to the net if there's any interest.
Thank you.

Subject: Yet another Sys 7 tip...

One of the great features included in System 7 is the ability to hide
application window when switching to another application. Using the
Hide (app name) or Hide Others commands from the new menu on the right
side of the menu bar (what is that menu called?), the windows can be
temporarily put aside. But, it is a two step process - hide the window
and then choose the new application.

However, if you hold down the option key when choosing an application
>From this menu, the current window will automatically be hidden. Nice
touch!

Also, I have a mixed Sys 6.0x and Sys 7 environment. I tried to put the
new LaserWriter driver on my Sys 6 machines, but they all use floppy
disks (no hard drives). This is nearly impossible because the driver size
has increased from 65K to 225K! So, after a little experimenting, I discovered
that LW v5.2 seems to work fine on my Sys 7 Macs, contrary to Apple's
recommendation.
