It is useful for those who subscribe to "Hua Xia Wen Zhai" (ccman-l\\@uga.cc.uga.edu) and "Chinese Articles from HKU" (car-request\\@ahkcus.org). The features are: * Supports both GB format (simplified Chinese character used in mainland China) and BIG5 format (traditional Chinese character used in Taiwan and Hong Kong) WITHOUT using a Mac Chinese OS. * The Chinese articles can be viewed and printed either horizontally (from left to right, top to bottom - the modern way) or vertically (from top to bottom, right to left - the traditional way). * The minimum hardware requirement is a Mac Plus with 1 Mb RAM (512e should work, but has not been tested). * It is multifinder friendly and can be used under System 7.0. * The application itself is small (about 10 K). Two font libraries are obtained from anonymous ftp sides. (cclib.16 [GB font] is from 128.123.1.14 inside pub/chinese/ChTex-1.1.tar.Z and chinese.16 [BIG5 font] is from 192.55.187.25 at src/pc/HKU. Many thanks to all respondents re my problem of getting tabs into an ASCII file of numbers, for plotting in Cricket Graph. At last count: 38 replies! Summary of suggestions: (1) write CHAR(9), with an A1 format, between the columns of numbers to imbed a tab via Fortran; (2) use a text editor such as McSink to replace spaces with tabs; (3) same suggestion using a word processor (in the 'Change' function, MS Word recognizes 'white space' in a file with " ^w " and can replace it with " ^t " as the tab character); (4) read data into a spreadsheet like Excel, then save as tab-delimited data; and (5) use a better plotting program such as Kaleidagraph or Igor, where tabs between columns are not required. More than one respondent also sent BinHex'd files to take care of the tab problem. Again, thanks to all. I'm pursuing several of these options to increase my flexibility. Your polite responses for what now seems to be a simplistic question is also much appreciated. I actually found one solution not mentioned by anyone - the columns of numbers (without tabs) will read into an array in MathCAD. Each column can then be identified as a vector, and vectors can be plotted against each other. MathCAD's plotting capabilities are very basic, but it worked (and the graph can be pasted into MacDraw for further annotation). - Bob Menton menton@wave.nrl.navy.mil ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jun 91 05:15:48 CDT From: traurig@ncavax.decnet.lockheed.com (Scott Traurig/603-885-3408/Lockheed Sanders) Subject: Decoding ".Z" files Hi Folks, I am currently searching for a good share/free-ware or public domain SMTP mail client for my ethernet & MacTCP equipped 2si. Problem #1: Does anyone have any good leads for me (names of software, FTP sites)? Problem #2: I did identify a couple of likely candidates, Beaver 0.85 and SMTP 0.87, which I FTP'd from csc2.anu.edu.au Unfortunately, SMTP came as "smtp0.87.sit.hqx.Z", and Beaver came as "beaver-0.85.Z", and, of course, I have no clue how to decode a ".Z" file. I have binary FTP'd them successfully (I also tried ASCII FTP but all I got was trash). They came uuencoded but that was no problem. Can someone point me to the correct utility for decoding ".Z" files, or, alternately, point me to an FTP site that encodes these files as plain old ".hqx". I though the problem was the disk drivers, as several others had reported. It was instead my ignorance. Here's a brief resume: Using either System Switcher1.1 or the Startup Device control panel device, I had set the external, partitioned, drive as the startup drive. One restarting, the happy mac would be displayed, then a checkerboard pattern would flash for an instance, then the screen would grey, followed by the happy mac. This cycle would go on as long as I let it. Calls to Ehman assured me the drivers were ok. After checking terminations, switching system folders between drives and doing numerous other little things, a tech at Ehman got the idea that I may have had the system 7.0 folder on the WRONG PARTITION. You MUST put the sytem folder on the uppermost partition, the one that loads and displays its icon first. I had it on the partition that was lowest on the totem pole on the right side of the screen. The manual did not contain any statement about system folder placement. To be fair, I would imagine the great majority of people do not have both internal and external drives (except, of course, for the hot shots who subscribe to this digest!). It never occured to Ehman to include instructions for second hard drives and I was totally ignorant of the nuances. Anyway, problem solved. Thanks to all the people who offered advice, assuming that I had the partition thing right. There was some misconception about System Switcher. It CAN be used just like Startup Device to switch among drives. A few people thought it could only be used to switch between systems on the same disk. I have still not found any documentation on System Switcher 1.1 in my usual places (info-mac and the MACSERVE@PUCC listserver). Thanks to all who responded again. Sorry to bother the list again but can anyone suggest anything before I end up taking my MAC back for repairs? I may have a problem with my FDHD drive. I ftp stuff to the mainframe at work and then download it to my PS/2 using Kermit. My 1.44 MB disks have been formatted on the PS/2. I do this because it's faster to download at work at 19200KB instead of at home at 2400KB. I take the DOS disk and use Apple File Exchange on my MAC to translate the ftped files to the MAC format. It was working pretty good until last night. I had a problem translating one of three files that were on a diskette from work. After retrying, the one file was successfully translated. I was backing up my hard drive to get ready to install System 7.0. I started to reformat some DOS formatted disks to do my backups when three disks in a row would not initialize! I've only had the MAC for 60 days and I doubt that dust would be causing the problem. The diskettes were sold by SONY. Is there a problem with formatting diskettes back and forth between a PS/2 and a MAC? I can't believe that these mechanisms are that sensitive! I plan to buy a couple of boxes of diskettes to use exclusively for system backups! At what point should I feel like I need to take the machine in for service? Are there any tests I can perform to help get a definitive answer as to whether I truely have a problem or not? Should I be using a different brand of diskettes? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide! Since the PC file format is not one of those supplied by either program, I have tried many combinations. Even though I selected the CR/LF->CR transformation whenever available, it seemed that the LFs were not stripped during translation. What did I do wrong? After the translation, I have to run some program with the translated files because the translated files have no creator information. What will be the best of achieving the same result as above? He reported that his Radius Full Page Display froze his pointer under system 7.0. I have a Radius Two Page display and had no trouble. The software provided by Radius to enlarge the menu bar does not work with Sys 7 but the new software (RadiusWare 2.0 which replaces II Display, SE/30 Display, and Pivot Display plus others?) is finished. Radius nicely emailed me a copy two weeks ago. I also was told I would need a ROM upgrade but since my system worked fine without it and when I installed the RAdiusWare 2.0 software I recovered all the functionality I had under sys 6 so I am not planning to upgrade yet. It seems that there may be a difference between the FPD and TPD so do be careful about finding out what you do need to run Sys 7 with Radius monitors.
