If so, please let me know. I'm interested in all kind of PL/I softwares commercial or not. And also pardon me for trying to use PL/I on a PC but after working with so many years with PL/I on mainframes, I just can't give it up. Thanks in advance... (I've run across this problem on Cordata and Tandon PCs specifically) When leaving my PC for any length of time (coffee breaks, etc.) I return to find that the first character I enter *doesn't* register, i.e. entering "C:>cd\dos" appears as "C:>d\dos" and a bad command message is returned. It's not a major problem, just a minor inconvenience, but I would like to know why it happens and thereby patching a fix. Any Help??? I divided by the number of hours in a day (86400) and subtracted the number of days in the years 1970-1988 (6940). The result I get is 11. Although it is Jan 11, 1989, it should result in 10, since this day has only fractionally past. I suppose that any software that depends on this function will be likewise broken. -David- Bitnet: david@wubios.wustl ^ Mr. David J. Regarding the tilde/caret swapping: When the digest replies started coming through ( #61 I think ), the caret had indeed been turned into a tilde, but even more peculiarly, the tilde got turned into a percent sign. It might be interesting if we can track down exactly where the character conversions are occurring. I noticed that some EARN/BITNET users were experiencing no problems, whilst all of the JANET (UK) users were having problems. Yours, Ray Bellis [V7 #58 is on it's way to you... Regarding character swapping: It would be interesting in an academic way to find out what is causing the swapping. I imagine most materials assume prior DOS knowledge and explain OS/2 relative to DOS. My DOS knowledge, though, is purposely limited (to avoid permanent brain damage) so I'd prefer materials that assume either a general background or a UNIX background. I'd like to know (for books) the author's name, title, publisher, cost, whether you've read it yourself, whether you recommend it, and any other comments. For seminars and classes I'd like the corresponding information (title, instructor, company, cost, whether you've taken the class or seminar, whether you recommend it, comments) as well as any location, on-site/self study/video tape options, or scheduling information you have. Don't just tell me what's good, I also want to know what to avoid. Of course I'll summarize the responses to this list. (So let me know if you want your identity withheld.) Thanks in advance. I stumbled on this one when a friend told me his PS/2 Model 50 with IBM PC-DOS 3.3 would not execute AUTOEXEC.BAT upon booting from the hard drive. It would just boot and come up with Microsoft Corp ... Dos 3.3 ... Copyright ... C> His file was indeed called AUTOEXEC.BAT (no control characters in the filename (:-)) in the root directory and all commands in there were valid. CONFIG.SYS contained a SHELL=C:\SYSTEM\BIN\COMMAND.COM line (so COMMAND.COM was NOT in the root directory). I tried moving AUTOEXEC.BAT in the same directory as COMMAND.COM and it would still not execute. Then I removed the SHELL=... line from CONFIG.SYS, moved COMMAND.COM to root and re-booted. It worked. My question: is this a BUG or a FEATURE? Thanks! Namely, since windows 386 is a combo of windows 286 plus a memory manager (like 386 to the max, Quarterdeck QEMM ??), are the pieces truly independent and is the windows 286 part usable on a 286 machine if one wants or needs to move the windows environment off the 386 machine to a 286 one, or must one get a windows/286 package separately ? Is it possible to upgrade a windows 286 package to the 386 version. Can one run windows 286 under the aforementioned 386 managers other than microsoft's and achieve the same result ?
