Yes, the problem still exists| We have had some problems here, using true
blues and clones (new machines with clean diskheads).

Having formatted 720kb disks on a 1.44 mb drive on one machine, has caused
problems on PC's with only 720 kb drives. I do not say that this is
happens every time, the rule seems to be Murphys law... (which can be
more frustrating)

Subject: A Question on Data Files

There is an easy way to have programs find overlay files. You need the
following things in your autoexec.bat or config.sys files: Lastdrive=h:
(or some high letter), tell wordstar that its overlay files are in drive
h: and then use the subst command to redirect drive h: to the actual
location of the files. This works well with older versions of turbo
pascal also.

Subject: Resetting the PC

There is a file at SIMTEL called PD1:<msdos.sysutl>WARMCOLD.BOOT
which describes how to do this without INT 19H. The code is as follows:

      mov dx,0040
      mov ds,dx
      mov bx,0072
      mov word ptr [bx], 1234
      jmp ffff:0000

I did it just like that with DEBUG and it's worked fine. If you want to
do a cold boot with memory check, etc., use 0000 instead of 1234.

Does anyone know of a shareware or public domain Tektronix 4105 (or
higher) emulator that will run on PC-compatibles? It must run on a CGA

[A commercial program of this sort is one called "Magic Mover". I have
never used it, but have seen it used by one of the workers in my office.

Subject: Information on a program called CAUSE

The other day I read an short note in BYTE-magazine about an object
oriented application generator called CAUSE. The article said that it was
available on both the Macintosh and IBM PC's, and that it creates
stand-alone applications.

Has someone out there some experience with that piece of software? Is it
a good solution if you want to develop applications that run on the
Macintosh and PC's (how portable is the source...)? Is it easy to learn
(depends on how one defines the word "easy", my background is BASIC, Turbo
Pascal, PROGRESS (4GL)).

Other comments...

Thanks

Subject: Re: INT 19H not working

Although I can not confirm it at the moment (this machine is not a clone),
about a year ago I was poking around in the ROM in segment F000 and if I
remember correctly there is a long jump at F000:FFF0 that enters the boot-
up routine. I believe it is the same routine that is used when the system
is first powered-up; without the "wear-and-tear" of switching off and on.

I tested this by setting up a long jump to F000:FFF0 (?) within debug and
when executed the system did reboot and there where config.sys and
autoexec files present.

I am writing a small spreadsheet application, and would like more
information on the how Lotus 123 internally stores its cell data. Could
anyone out there in PC-Land help me or give me a reference? In a recent
issue of PCMag, there was some discussion on how Lotus stores this info on
disk. Does it use this same format in memory?

Thanks

A reader wrote that the Mandelbrot-set generating program Mandelex was not
recognizing his computer. I had this problem too, and found that the
solution in my case was simple and silly: the environment string given to
identify the computer *must* be in capital letters! I.e., SET
COMPATIBILITY=IBM, not ibm.

Subject: Request for CD software

Hi all:

I've got a Hitachi CDR-1503S CD-ROM player/disk drive. Unlike the other
CD-ROM's we use here at work, this one has audio jacks on it as well as
data. Does anyone in netland have or know of software that will let me
use the player to play standard audio CD's? I was sent a photocopy of a
bug-ridden BASIC program to play CD's but I have little patience for
debugging the work of non-programmer's. Thanks.
