Subject: dos 4.0 vs dos 3.3

Hi Ya'll,

I've been running an IBM PS/2 model 50Z using DOS 3.3. Every once in a
while (once or twice a month) or when I'm doing something real important
my machine will freeze with a 110 error (6000 (s) is also displayed). I've
had the machine serviced with no effect on the error.

Now to make things real strange I recently updated to DOS 4.0. After
discovering that half of my disk utilities didn't work I went back to 3.3.
Happy to be back to a stable enviroment, I started to play with several
programs that do things in memory ie a print spool er, file decompresion
utility, accounting software. All these programs will freeze my machine,
requiring a cold boot.

BIG CATCH-> they run fine under DOS 4.0. What could DOS 4.0 be doing in
memory that DOS 3.3 isn't? I'd hate to go to 4.0 because too many of my
utilities won't run under 4.0. Has anyone seen something like this before?
Any ideas on why these programs won't run in 3.3. I'd appreciate any
advice, help, information, etc on this problem.

Thanks in advance-
-Kam Mitchell

Subject: A slow pc, What's wrong with it?

I have one of those unidentified clones, entitled with this uninformative
AGC sign. I'm not too happy with its performance. Norton's CI computation
index is 1.0, Disk Index (DI) - .4, and Performance Index - .8.

I tried running it on a turbo mode, but eventhough the prompt sign
changes, nothing else seems to happen. I tried two refresh rate
optimizers ((MHZ.EXE - MHZ+Ver SW1.0 by M & M Systems) and REF.COM (PC
Rockland Refresh Rate Analyzer by Keith P. Graham)). Both worked, but none
made any difference as far as speed is concerned.

Just one more piece of information. My BIOS chip is DTK/ERSO 2.38. Is
there anything I can do to improve performance? Is there any address that
you know I can refer my question to?

Subject: Inboard PC, Brain and the Zenith Z-248

Three basic questions:

Will the inboard pc work in my Zenith 159? Will it work with Windows
/386? Will it work (is there a version for it of) OS/2? Would it be a
waste to get an Inboard card and keep my slow 20 meg hard drive and
hercules video?

Question #2: Can someone give me some more information on the brain
virus. Specifically, I have heard whispers about it. I have been
relatively careful with my software. Since I haven't had any major
problems with my machine, can I assume I am not infected? How can I tell
if I am infected? What do I do in that case?

Question #3. I got my Zenith 159 in October of 1988. I have had memory
parity errors just about as long as I have had my machine. They are more
prevalent with some pieces of software than others. REMARK had an article
suggesting inserting a capacitor on the Ram bank board, but my board
number did not match the one that they gave. Any suggestions? I have had
my machine into the shop but they were unable to find anything other than
a hidden IBMBIOS file. I called them after I saw the REMARK article and
they said that since the board number in the article was different from
the number on my board, the fix did not apply.

Thanks for any/all help.

A friend of mine purchased the Northgate and is very pleased with it. He
too was considering buying the Zeos, but picked the Northgate. I can't
give you all the specifics, but the Northgate is quality-built. I opened
it up myself. The guy who bought it is the owner of his own computer store
as well, so that's something to go on for you. The model he bought was
the 386 tower.  Very impressive.

Subject: Is there a Cyrillic WP?

Yes, there is a Russian language word processor available from Simtel20:

Filename			Type	 Bytes	 CRC

Directory PD1:<MSDOS.EDITOR>
RUSS.ARC			BINARY	 67511  0B5FH

And, if you have an EGA video display adaptor:

Filename			Type	 Bytes	 CRC

Directory PD1:<MSDOS.EGA>
CYRILLIC.ARC			BINARY	 55560  5399H

Which will display the Russian character set on an EGA.

Subject: More on the mouse drivers

MS Hardware support is mistaken. I (of course) draw my own graphics cursor
in extended EGA/VGA modes. The problem is that the mouse jumps the cursor
by 2 or 3 pixels at a time, and this cannot be changed if one uses a
non-standard int 10h call. Also, there is no way to support the mouse in
132 column mode using the MS mouse driver (unless they have fixed this). I
guess the moral of the story is "go true blue or get..."

Subject: Networkable spreadsheet

I have a query from a potential LAN user. He wants a 'networkable'
spreadsheet for a PC - based LAN. I think that I could accomplish this by
having one spreadsheet file, and relying on DOS 3.x locks to keep more
than one user out of it, but this would create some unacceptable
restrictions (according to the user). What I need is something like Dbase
III+ or Rbase SysV (LAN versions), but a spreadsheet instead of a
database. I know that the new version of Lotus 1-2-3 is supposed to be out
this summer, and is supposed to support LANs, but I wonder if there is
anything else available.

Thanks for any information.

Subject: Printing w/PS 2/80's w/Dual Async Adpt A's

Here at GSIA we are experiencing a strange problem with our PS 2/80's. We
use the IBM PS/2 Dual Async Adapter/A cards to print to a HP LaserJet II.
At the end of the print we get either a double tab twelve or so spaces,
(we can not tell which). This causes the first line of the next print to
be shifted to the right. The behavior occurs only from the DOS PRINT and
DOS "Copy xxx.xx prn:" commands, (versions 3.30, 4.0 [others not tested]).
Programs such as Kermit or WP, which print directly to the printer do not
have this problem.

Has anyone seen this problem before? Suggestions? Thank you for your
time and consideration,

Subject: Problems with double->int conversion with Microsoft C

Writing a simple numerical analisys program, using Microsoft C v 5.1, we
were stuck by a curious behavior wich is due to the double to integer
conversion. The following short program explains the problem.

      #include <stdio.h>
      main()
      {
       short int i,j;
       double d;
       i = 100.0 / 0.1;
       d = 100.0 / 0.1;
       printf("i = %d\n",i);
       printf("d = %lf\n",d);
       j = d;
       printf("j = %d\n",j);
      }

The results are:
      i = 999          (!!!)
      d = 1000.000000
      j = 1000

what's happening?

Thanks for any help and suggestion about our problem.

  About my problem with FDFORMAT: Of course I know that after a reset all
TSRs are removed. In fact, FDREAD was in my AUTOEXEC.BAT. I think the
problem is that the floppy doesn't switch correctly between 80 and 40
tracks.  I have a Phoenix BIOS 3.01, and 2 floppies (1.2M/720K).

  I already sent a note to the author, but I haven't received anything.

Hi all.

I've fitted a 720K 3.5 inch floppy drive to my PC. It works, but it works
very slowly - 10 seconds to get a directory of a blank disk! My 360K 5.25
inch drive works fine. Any ideas what's happening? I take it this is not
normal behaviour - but if it is, then please tell me!

I'm using MS-DOS 3.2 with a no-name clone (very compatible, Phoenix BIOS -
even works with the Intel Inboard 386/PC). The floppy controller has a
bank of eight DIP switches - two for each drive. These select whether the
connected drives are 360K, 720K, 1.2MB, or 1.44MB. There is also a jumper
to select between 'AT' and 'PS/2', which is currently on AT, but I have
tried it on PS/2, and it made no discernable difference. The drive (I'm
pretty sure) is an NEC 1036A, and is configured as drive B:. The 5.25 inch
is drive A:.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Please reply directly to me, and
I will summarise to the list.

Subject: Turning key-clicks off for Zenith.

My office has some Zenith PC clones (a random mix of Z-159's and Z-248's.)
All these micros have the key-click turned on upon power-up. The Z-159
requires you to hit Alt-Esc to toggle the key clicking on/off, while the
Z-248 requires an Alt-~.

Is there a way to have the key-click turned off while powering-up? Is it
possible to write a program which will toggle the key-clicks? If so, I
can then include it in AUTOEXEC.BAT.

I would really appreciate it if anyone can tell me if this can be done,
and if possible, how to do it.

Thanks a ton in advance.
