Steven Zepp (stevenz@munro.yorku.ca) asks; <...I have a pc clone and a 300/1200/2400 baud modem. I was wondering if it is possible to talk to the type of teletype device used by deaf people. If so, are there any programs around to do this and/or what are the protocols?...> So far as I remember, the devices used by deaf people to communicate by telephone use either 45.5 or 50 baud teletype codes, i.e. 5 bit Baudot code. This means that you cannot communicate with them using your modem. However, the Baudot system is still in active use by radio hams, most of whom use home computers interfaced to the radio at audio frequency with a box usually referred to as a 'Terminal Unit' or TU for short. These take ASCII from the PC in one side and produce the equivalent, suitably modulated Baudot out the other. TUs are commercially available, and these days are usually bundled in with packet radio, fax, etc., interfaces as well as Baudot. Because they are available for a (reasonably) large market they seem to be cheaper than the specialist devices used by the deaf. I see no reason why you could not interface a TU to the 'phone as easily as to the radio, legal aspects notwithstanding. I'm working from memory here, so don't go out and buy 200 TUs on this info! I'm sure about the TU stuff (I'm a radio ham) but not too certain about the devices for the deaf - the info was in Byte some months ago. Thanks for your help, Victor Reijs ------------------------------ Date: Fri 26 May 89 16:00:36-EST From: Tom Maloney <TJM@MATH.AMS.COM> Subject: EGA - 480 vs. 350 I have a Compu-Add Standard XT/8 that came originally with a Samsung EGA monitor and no-name EGA card. It worked fine for ~2 years. Now in text mode if you have to scroll (dir > 25 lines, or hit return 25 times) all the characters on screen have their ascii values increased by 1 (e -> f, <blank> -> !). Applications that do their own screen writing (brief, MS-Word) do not have this problem. My questions: 1) I think the EGA-bios chip on the board has gone south. Is it possible/cost-effective to try to locate another bios chip and install it? Are those too tightly tied to the hardware to get a different manufacturers chip to work? If it is possible, where would I find one? 2) Assuming my old board is now only good as a paperweight, can I get one of the "enhanced" EGA boards (640x480) to work with my monitor? I know the 350 line mode will work, but I'd prefer not to pay for more functionality than I can use. Any personal recommendations/must to avoids for cards? Please e-mail directly to me and I will summarize. Thank you for your time. | Tom Maloney | USnail: | INTERNET: | | American Mathematical Society | TJM@MATH.AMS.COM | | P.O. Unfortunately, it took me hours to get SIMIBM.IDX converted into SIMIBM.LST because of some errors in the description fields of SIMIBM.IDX. The guilty lines are the following (three of 'em): > "PD1:","<MSDOS.SYSUTL>","PASSWRD5.ARC",1,12980,8,880920, ""password" device driver to lock PC" > "PD1:","<MSDOS.PCTECH>","BESTOF.ARC",1,166092,8,880908, "Selection of "Best of PC Tech Journal" progs" > "PD1:","<MSDOS.VOICE>","HELPME2.ARC",1,8031,8,871130, "Voice cries out "Help Me!" from PC speaker" As you can see, the description fields of all three lines carry embedded double quotes ("), which are used to delimit the fields from each other. So, if you've been been having trouble using SIMIBM.IDX, look up these lines with a word processor which can read and write ASCII, change the "- signs around "password", "Best of PC Tech Journal" and "Help Me!" into apostrophes ('), something else or nothing, save SIMIBM.IDX as an ASCII file and carry on. The file is PD1:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS>SIMIBM.IDX. An archived version of the same file is in PD1:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS>SIMIBM.ARC. A list of all files in the MSDOS archives is contained in directory PD1:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS> as follows: NODESCR.IDX contains a listing of those files that do not have a discrip- tion. SIMCVT.BAS is a BASICA/GWBASIC program to convert SIMIBM.IDX to a human- readable text file. See also SIMCVT2.BAS and SIMCVT3.BAS. SIMIBM.HDR contains a PC-File+ database header for use with SIMIBM.IDX. SIMIBM.IDX contains a listing of all files that have a one line descrip- tion. SIMIBM.IDX (updated monthly) is automatically created by taking the latest FILES.IDX (updated daily) and comparing it against a combined list of current files on several BBS systems. Also available: FILDIF.ARC a program for comparing a previous copy of PD1:<MSDOS>FILES.IDX with a new copy. It displays files added and deleted since you got an older index. This is useful if you are trying to maintain an archive in sync with SIMTEL20. It can generate output scripts for batch FTP processing. SIMIBM.ARC contains the latest SIMIBM.HDR, SIMIBM.IDX, NODESCR.IDX, AAAREAD.ME (this file), SIMCVT.BAS, SIMCVT2.BAS, SIMCVT3.BAS, SIMIBM.DB3 (information on how to use the index with dBASEIII), SIMIBM.HDR (PC-File+ database header), and SIMIBM.INF (explains the fields in the index). PD1:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS>SIMIBM.ARC is updated at approximately one month inter- vals (more frequently, time permitting). PD1:<MSDOS>FILES.IDX is updated on a daily basis (sometimes several times a day when a lot of new files are uploaded). This file is a comma- delimited file, suitable for importing into PC-File+ or DBase III. It's impossible to make a daily updated list with descriptions with the quantity of new programs available. We average about 300 new files per month. Upgrades from TP 5.0 to TP 5.5 are supposed to be $34.95, and upgrades from TP 4.0 or TP 5.0 to the new professional version of TP 5.5, which includes the debugger, are $99.95.
