Subject: .ZIP Ansi codes

Yeah, this has been making the rounds on the DR_DEBUG echo on FidoNet
(with lots of heat and little light). The two real solutions so far are
to use STRIPZ to strip the comments, and to omit ANSI.SYS or use an ANSI
replacement without the keyboard reassignment (ZANSI but not NANSI).

As pointed out by people who got upset by the PK-bashing that ensued, ANY
archiver which allows comments (PAK, ZIP, ZOO, etc) can become the source
of a key-reassigning escape sequence.

Subject: 286 Accelerator

I was wondering if someone out there might know how to activate a 286
accelerator card from Mega Omega called -- The Companion Card.

This card is installed in a Zenith 158 that we picked up as a used package
deal from a non-retail source and there was no manual to be found.

We think the card includes 2 meg of extended memory (1 meg one the card, 1
meg piggy backed). I have checked the included harddisk and autoexec.bat
for associated utilities but can find none.

I have never used an accelerator card before and can not find anybody who
has. Since the card was installed in the machine I am assuming that the
company that was using it had it up and running (that company has bit the
dust and cannot be found --- bankrupcy :-) ).

Are these cards activated with a hot key? Do they require software?
Anyone ever hear of this company?

Any help getting this card up and running would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Subject: creating a 5.25" copy of DOS 4.0 from a 3.5" diskette

Recently I posted a request for info on transferring DOS 4.0 from a
machine with a hard drive and a 3.5" floppy to a machine with 5.25"
floppies. Using a combination of Laplink, Norton Utilities and Debug I
was able to create a bootable 5.25" copy of DOS 4.0.

First I created formatted 5.25" floppy with my old version of DOS 3.2,
without installing a system on it. Then using Laplink I transferred the
hidden system files from the other system (a PS/2) to the floppy. Using
debug on the PS/2 system, I read the FAT into memory and wrote it out to a
file named FAT. I then transferred this to the other system with Laplink
and using DEBUG, wrote it onto the 5.25" floppy (carefully since this
involves writing to sectors on the floppy bypassing the normal file
manipulation methods). Finally I compared the BOOT sectors of the two
systems.

The BOOT program for DOS 4.0 differs from DOS 3.2 as do the hidden system
files IBMBIO.COM and IBMDOS.COM. Information regarding the media type is
stored near the beginning of the BOOT sector. Transferring a copy of the
DOS 4.0 boot sector to the DOS 3.2 machine (as described above) and
modifying the appropriate bytes in the data area of the BOOT sector and
then writing it out to track 0 on the 5.25" floppy then created a DOS 4.0
bootable diskette.

I realize that this can violate copyright laws and license agreements and
is offered here for informational purposes only.

Does anyone know of where I can get .GIF files (or files of other graphics
formats) from the public domain? I snarfed some from SIMTEL20 but I'd
like to know if there are any other sources of this kind.

Thanks for your response.

Subject: Problem with PS/2 model 60 device drivers

We have a customer using IBM PS/2 model 60 under DOS 3.3, and is having
problem with DISK DRIVER (I assume). I have tried to get an answer from
IBM's technical support group ASKINFO, an electronic bulletin board, but
no luck yet. I would like to know if any body else have had the same
problem with model 60s. Is there a solution to the problem? Following is
the user's description of the problem:

PS/2 Model 60-40 (s/n 72-8161168) IBM DOS 3.30.

Boot DOS from any disk (floppy or fixed), with or without CONFIG.SYS, it
seems not to matter. (STACKS=0,0 or 64,512 and/or versions 1.20 & 1.30
DASDDRVR have not helped).

Log to Drive C:, and don't do any other command in between these steps...

Do something that overwrites the transient portion of COMMAND.COM. (Big
Lotus spreadsheets, or other large programs do, but here's a quick way to
do the same with DEBUG:

  c> debug
  -f9000:0 fffe 0
  -q
  C>

If the system didn't go crazy already, copy a file from one directory to
another: COPY \DOS\CHKDSK.COM \

At this point the screen will blank, and eventually a stack error message
may appear.

There's nothing 'illegal' about this combination of events, application
programs are free to overwrite COMMAND.COM in high memory. Just don't
write a file after running one that does.

These steps cause no errors on any other brand of system, with any other
DOS, even IBM's. But I tried it on two Model 60-40's, with the same fatal
result.

This occurs even if I use Compaq DOS 3.31d.

This is only a problem when the first thing I do in the morning or after
rebooting is write a file to disk. If I perform lots of reading
operations, like CHKDSK, DIR or whatever, then all's well from then on.

Thanks in advance.

Does anyone have any recommendations for software that can be used to
inventory PC equipment in our company? We'd also like to record who the pc

Some kind of tracking system. Any ideas?

Subject: PC/VI Vendor

Custom Software Systems sold three products: PC/VI, PC/SPELL, and
PC/TOOLS. Each was an MS-DOS tool (or set of tools) that worked very
much like its equivalent under the UNIX(R) operating system. At one
point, AT&T took CSS to court, charging that CSS had taken UNIX system
source code from AT&T, compiled it, and sold the results as PC/SPELL and
PC/TOOLS. Please note that "look and feel" has nothing to do with it.
AT&T wrote it, AT&T distributed it under license, and CSS allegedly took
it and used in in ways that violated the license.

AT&T and CSS settled out of court, and never announced what their
settlement was. Shortly thereafter, CSS ceased operations and went out of
business.

There are several re-implementations of UNIX system tools available, both
commercial and freely distributed. One of the most popular is from
Mortice Kern Systems, 35 King St. North, Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA N2J

and more than a hundred other reimplementations of UNIX(R) system tools)
is $199. MKS VI alone is $149. This software is also available via
Programmer's Connection (a mail order firm), 7249 Whipple Avenue NW, North
Canton, Ohio, USA 44720, 800-336-1166 (voice, USA), 800-225-1166 (voice,
Canada), 216-494-3781 (voice, everywhere else), 216-494-5260 (FAX). They
charge $179 for the Toolkit, and $135 for vi.

Subject: UBASIC and unix-ARC

I read a review (by Jon Barwise in the Notices of the American
Mathematical Society, v36 n5) of UBASIC 7.04, "an excellent public-domain
high-precision BASIC for IBM compatible PCs, written by the Japanese
number theorist Yuji Kida." I didn't spot it on Simtel20, and wonder if
it is available via ftp or whatnot from some other site.

Also, is there a Unix utility (C source) to list files in an ARC file and
perhaps even extract them? This could save me some time writing one.
