Subject: Coordinate resolution with Microsoft mouse

I've run into a small snag programming with the Microsoft mouse. I called
MS and they couldn't be of any help but I can't believe I'm the first one
to have this problem.

I'm using the mouse to control a pointer on a video grabber that I'm using
to analyze video images. The screen is separarate from the console screen
so of course I can't use Microsoft's mouse driver to draw my pointer on
the screen. I've written my own. The problem comes when I read the mouse
coordinates. Because my PC screen is in text mode, the mouse driver
thinks I'm using a text mouse pointer and only reports mouse coordinates
in multiples of 8 pixels. But, I want to be able to pinpoint individual
pixels on the digitizer screen.

I tried shifting the coordinates right 3 bits but I couldn't get
acceptable travel speed out of the mouse. Does anyone know of a way to
trick the driver into thinking that I'm working with a graphics screen or
of forcing it to give pixel level resolution? I'm using the mouse
documentation that we received with our mouse in 1986 so there may be a
few calls I don't know about.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions/sympathy.

Subject: Desperately Seeking Webster (Dictionary List)

I am looking for public domain dictionaries. At the moment I really only
need word lists but part-of-speech info and definitions could be useful
down the road. I have found the dictionaries for the ispell program by
ftping at random and I also found a Webster's 2nd international word list.
I lost the Webster's 2nd and can't remember where it came from. If any
has or knows where to get these things or others like them (word frequency
lists or large blocks of standard text etc.) I'd appreciate the help.

Some time ago, I posted:

... I need to look at the SCROLL LOCK key and see if the light is on or
off from within a program. I don't necessarily wish to do a keyboard
interrupt to watch it, as that would take up CPU time in what is already a
time constricted program.
....

Unfortunately, I am using BASIC to write this program in, although I
am compiling it using the MicroSoft compiler.

I received a response telling me that the addresses I needed to watch were
0040:0017 and 0040:0018

I tried using DEF SEG=&H0040 and then PEEK (&H18) and PEEK(&H17) but this
gives me no change when the keys are pressed.

Perhaps I am missing the point, or my Zenith computer is not fully
compatible ... ut can anyone help me here?

I am using GW-BASIC v3.x

If anyone can help me, please do...

Subject: MSC5.1 memory fragmentation/coalescing

i am having problems with a mail reader. the mail reader reads in messages
for the user, and keeps them around for him to read again (keeping them in
memory allows for faster access). when i have filled up far memory, i
start freeing the old messages (each line of which was malloc'd). this
tends to work for awhile, but i start to lose too quickly. _memaval()
doesnt work with far memory. as near as i can tell, i am losing because
the memory is getting to fragmented. i have tried playing games with
malloc'ing standard size chunks, but this does not seem to help much.

has anyone done any work to sovle this problem? have any of you seen this
before, and have news for me (it isnt fragmentation, for instance).

basically, any help would be appreciated. thanx

Lately I bought a Western Digital WD1003-RA2 RLL harddisk controller for

My PS/2 Model 50 began showing 162 errors on boot up awhile back, asso-
ciated with a problem I was having with the disk drive. Our "service
contract" people came in a replaced the motherboard last week, after which
I started getting 162 and 163 errors, and both internal and external
drives failed, with a particularly nasty form of bug: if a diskette is
write protected, the controller will read it with no problem. If the
diskette is write enabled, however, the controller totally trashes the
disk, probably by wiping out track 0. I'd like to know if anyone else has
ever experienced this problem with the PS/2, or if I'm the lucky one to
experience a one of a kind bug.

Incidentally, after showing the error, the computer could be made to
finish booting by hitting F1.

Subject: Trapping cold boot signal

I'm working with an IBM PC-AT, and I have an expansion card which I'm
trying to integrate with some software. The problem is this: on certain
conditions, the card will lock up so that it becomes unusable, while it
allows the AT to remain usable. When this happens, the only way to get
the card unstuck is a cold reboot (power off). I wish to be able to reset
the card without doing a cold reboot. I've gone through several
references, including Norton's books, to no avail (although I tried INT
19H, which didn't reset the expansion card). The object is to be able to
reset the card automatically, under software control, on those occasions
when it goes south on me. Suggestions?

Subject: Turbo C v1.5

I am currently using a copy of Turbo C v1.5...

I ran into a copy of a C program with some inline assembly language in
it, and my compiler instructs me to have a copy of masm.exe in the path,
and use the TCC command file to compile it.

The C compiles just fine, but when it calls MASM.EXE, it is passing the
following filename:

    ml,egacolrs

MASM doesn't like that filename, and there are no files in that directory
except egacolrs.c which the inline assembly is in. It asks me to give it
a good .asm file, but to no avail, there is nothing that I can do......

Can anyone tell me what the problem is? I even tried passing a -B
using TCC, but that doesn't seem to change anything.
