Alternatively, I have a small program that I slapped together that does the same thing in one step. I could .UUE it and send it out to anyone who wants it. - George ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 89 5:09:36 CDT From: david@wubios.WUstl.EDU (David J. Camp) Subject: Exact Ordeal We have been trying to install EXACT with Microsoft Word. My understanding of why it does not work is as follows. The tech support person from Exact explained that when they use it, they download all of their fonts, then load Exact, then their word processor to print the document. Microsoft Word tries to do its own downloading, so it is impossible for the downloading to be done first without some hacking. Also, I think MS Word only downloads the fonts that it needs, so that would not include those used by Exact. We are thinking about writing a .BAT file to download the fonts, but we need to do some research to figure out exactly how to do it. I would appreciate any advice you can give me. -David- Bitnet: david@wubios.wustl ^ Mr. David J. Presently completed projects include WP4.2, WP5.0 to CCI-officepower and back. Now they want to support wordstar and MS-Word as well. What i need is pointers to some docs, developers toolkits (like the one available from WP corp.) or any other pertinent information in regards to popular formats. I have plenty of books for lotus, dbase, and many others, but i need IN DEPTH breakdown of the binary flags containing special character info, fonts, etc in these files. The final product will rotate around the CCI-Officepower and the programs will reside on the CCI power6 (yes, i am a unix system admin, PLEASE don't hold that against me). I will make available to simtel20 all of the conversion routines as soon as they are test driven at this site. Another note: Please no pointers to commercial software, i have already looked and not been impressed with what i have seen. I need to keep ALL attributes in the documents, and transfer header and footers with the documents (not as easy as it seems!!). thanks in advance! bill walker. wrwalke@nswc-wo.arpa William Walker - E52 wrwalke@relay-nswc.navy.mil ICT inc. wrwalke@ictgate.uucp Junior Guru at Large ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 89 20:20 CET From: Norbert Sommer <VAL044%DD0RUD81.BITNET@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU> Subject: GAL-Programming Software I'd like to program GAL-chips. I'm writing an application that needs to be able to store at least a couple of 640x480-256color images in memory. I assume the only way to do this would be to use expanded memory. Does anyone have any programming tips for using expanded memory? There are a lot of expanded memory DOS functions. Could someone give me a short sample program that just takes some data stored in conventional memory and moves it into expanded memory? Apparently the NEC people here in the states haven't. The reason I need to know is because my boss is editing a book with various authors writing individual chapters. The publisher hoped to have all the chapters on disk in the same word processing format (WordPerfect). One of the authors, in Japan, submitted his chapter on disk using the above machine (NEC PC 9801). The rep I talked to at NEC hadn't heard of it and indicated that the line of computers that NEC sells in Japan is quite different from its line here in the states. The diskette is a 2SHD and he also used WordStar version 4.0. The computer is not IBM compatible, I'm wondering if it is an older CP/M machine. So, does anyone know what this machine is and, obviously, is there some means to retreive the file from the disk so that it can be converted to WordPerfect? I should mention that we have the various IBM compatible floppy drives available as well as a MS-DOS/CP/M compatible Dec Rainbow with its RX50 drives available. None of the above were able to read the diskette. The next part of the question is what word processing conversion programs are available? I've seen XWORD and it seems to handle conversions between WordStar and WordPerfect fine, but I expect there to be a number of other formats submitted that it (or the version I saw) doesn't support, e.g. WPS, Wang. Any experiences and/or feelings about various packages, both commercial and public domain (or shareware) will be appreciated. Obviously a PD/share- ware program would be preferable, but the integrity of the con- version and the ability to handle as many formats as possible are a priority. John Grady Chemistry Dept. I deleted the digest right after I sent you the message so I am posting it here; thousand apologies (I am one of those 300-baud low-budget CPM'ers and therefore refrain from lengthy include files, which I think more than compensates for this message :-) ). The part number of the Motorola part is MC1377. It does RGB to NTSC con- version with only a dozen, cheap, easy-to-find passive parts. With the addition of a slightly-harder-to-find part (a delay line), it can switch between NTSC and PAL with a single voltage control. (I think I told you 1373. Sorry.) The Motorola Linear and Interface has a cook-book-style application for the chip, so there should be no Pbm using it quick. About Signetics and Toshiba, I really saw them, but I can't find them. (Signetics uses a lot of Toshiba design or part numbers for their video-audio products. National Semiconductor has a part called "Video Modulator/Color (LM1889)" but I don't know what exactly it is. The Motorola part is easy enough to use. The price list I have is years old, so doesn't say much. By the way, you are gonna LOSE a HECK of a lot of resolution going from EGA to NTSC, unless you can afford highest-quality testing equipment from Phillips (the mother company of Signetics) or Hewlett-Packard (who is quite well known among the frugal shoppers around the world :-) ). I didn't read your message carefully enough to be able to tell what kind of a funding your "institution" or your department in particular might have. Good luck. -John ------------------------------ Date: 29 August 1989 12:41:17 CDT From: <U31754@UICVM.uic.edu> Subject: Pc-Board Hai Netters : Could any one let me know more about the PcBoard (the Bulletin) I am more intrested in its cost, the latest vesion, other competitive releases and any further info. about it; Gondi e-mail : u31754@uicvm.uic.edu gondi@uicbert.eecs.uic.edu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 89 09:40 JMT From: EDI%HADASSAH.BITNET@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU Subject: PCSA and PC/VMS common programs For those of you who have experience with PCSA: Do you know of products which work on the PC as well the VAX and share the same files? It has something to do with the BIOS code for handling the keyboard interrupts and mouse interrupts at the same time. We have switched to microsoft serial attached mice on those machines that can't live without the occasional flakey mice. We have 8 PS2 machines with the problem and still haven't gotten it fixed. Microsoft support center knows the problem as the 'wild mouse problem' Only the microsoft word people have a fix, and it is specific to word only. They replace a part of word and also the mouse driver to fix the problem. We have experinced the problem in windows, word, zsoft publishers paintbrush and others.
