I am missing some issues. Are back issues available??

[Back issues of the Info-IBMPC Digest are available from SIMTEL20 in
directory PD2:<archives.ibmpc>. These files are named YYMM.X-TXT where YY
is the YEAR of issue, MM is the MONTH issued, and X is 1, 2, or 3. This
last depends on how many issues were published in a particular month.
This digit is arbitrary and is selected automatically since the archiving
program tries to keep all files at about 150 kbytes in size.

May 1989 issues, for example, are stored in file
PD2:<ARCHIVES.IBMPC>8905.1-TXT.

Archives are available from September 1982 (file 8209.1-TXT) to date.
Current months digests are stored in file ARCHIV-IBMPC.TXT. GPH]

Subject: Extended subdirectory names

It is obviously not known well enough by some programmers that DOS
directory names may also have an extension. File name conventions also
apply to directory names. As a result of only expecting directory names of
max. 8 characters some PD and commercial programs are not flexible enough
or even crash. E.g. my tape- streamer MEMTEC application program allows
for only restoring files from the first directory of a number of
directories with the same name and a different extension if these
subdirectories all are specified in one and the same higher level
(sub)directory. Even several PC-Write versions lack handling extended
subdirectory names in their DIRECTORY (F8). Switching to previous or next
files in a series (in version 3.02) does not switch file names but
subdirectory names in these instances. This name convention feature needs
to be made public.

Done so,
Jim Groeneveld.

I am having trouble with the KA9Q TCP/IP package for the PC. Everything
seems to work fine on a seriel connect of two IBM's (SLIP-protokoll) when
the baudrate is lower than 4800. On higher rates, machines get stuck.

I have tried both, the build in and the packet driver, none had worked.

Possible errors:

   Modem control on the cable doesnt function (can somebody please tell
me, how the correct ibm to ibm seriel cable has to look like !!!???)

   something in the network protokoll parameters isnt tuned right for the
seriel transmission.

I have tried Ethernet (WD8003e) and it works fine !!!!!

If somebody out there in netland is using the KA9Q-Package, please write
me and the list, I think it would save a lot of time and trouble.

Is it still possible to FTP to Simtel20 from a VM system? For the last

[WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL has a limited number of sockets available for FTP.
If you get this message, or a message that implies that access is denied,
your only option is to keep trying.

HOWEVER, in particular this instance, there may have been some hardware
problems that may have caused your lack of access. Unfortunately for
the net, when hardware problems strike and could not be forseen in
advance, WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL management can't warn anyone.

It is now back up and you should not have any 'un-reasonable' problems
in reaching SIMTEL20.]

Does anyone have experience using Japanese on IBM PC's. I've been using
the ATOK (ASCII to Kanji) software on a Toshiba J-3100 (the Japanese
equivalent to the Toshiba 3200 in this country) and am looking for a way
to get the same facilities on a standard IBM PC (or PS/2). Either
hardware based or software based solutions would be of interest, but must
support both the phonetic syllabaries (hiragana and katakana) and kanji.
Ideally, a system that uses ATOK (or similar) interrupt driven software
would be preferred.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the idea, however my problem is that I DO NOT have dBaseIII.
I use PC Tools, whose data base created files in a dBase III format. If
I had dBase, my problems would be over, but I would be out a couple of
hundred bucks (PC Tools was $25 and my Sidekick manual's 1st page).

Yes, I know about shareware clones such as WAMPUM. However, why hassle
an entire program when all I needed was a readily accessible TSR database
- and PC Tools has been more than I expected.

One public program has already been mentioned to me. If I can figure it
out and it looks good, I'll try to upload it.

By the way, thanks for the answer. And thanks a LOT for doing the
newlsetter. It is one of my favorite reasons for logging on. It has
taught me a lot, and given me more of a sense of community in computerdom
than I ever expected to enjoy. I edit a newsletter for a national
organization (among other things), and have an inkling of how much effort
goes into your digest. My hat's off to you.

Subject: PC - PC xfer

Hello there,

Does anyone of you know of useful PC-PC xfer software? What I've got up to
now isn't quite reliable and flexible. I'll summarize some characteristics
and bugs:

characteristics:
KCOPY 2.3 / CATCH 1.06     ZIP 1.1                    XFER 06-05-86

only 9600 baud;            only 115,200 baud {BEST};  0-57600 baud;
tag individual files in files within only one one specific file only,
 any subdirectories on subdirectory, file lists, path specification may
 (hard)disk {BEST};         wildcards allowed;         be included;
subdirectories created files received in current specify receiving file
 on target PC {BEST};       or specified directory;    name (and path);
XMODEM/Batch;              XMODEM/Batch;              XMODEM;
current date/time;         preservation of original   current date/time;
                            date and time {BEST};
COM1;                      COM1 / COM2 {BEST};        COM1;

known, experienced bugs:
KCOPY 2.3 / CATCH 1.06     ZIP 1.1                    XFER 06-05-86

crashes at files of size crashes at files of sizes -
 0 (they sometimes are of integer multiples of
 really present);          512 bytes;
crashes sometimes with
 internal error #2,
 null pointer assignment;
some corrupted screen
 display;

Because of the XMODEM protocol all transfered files are extended in size
up to the next integer multiple of 128 bytes.

Does anyone have the documentation of KCOPY (send) and CATCH (receive)?

Thanks in advance,
Jim Groeneveld.

Subject: Response: Modified PS Drivers

To answer my own questions...

I had not set the item "Font already encoded?" to "Yes".

> With Microsoft Word,the problem I'm having is finding a way to get
> 5,6,10,12,15 and 17 cpi font sizes without getting taller (or shorter)

> modified in some way.

I had to change the "scalefont" commands in the .ini file to appropriate
"makefont" commands.

I now have postscript drivers for Word 4 and 5 and WordPerfect 5, which
produce output that matches a common dot matrix printer in terms of
character size and spacing and characters available. They support sizes
from 17cpi to 5cpi along with the full IBM extended character set. What
this means is that users can now print documents on our LaserWriters which
they formatted for their dot matrix, without having to do any
reformatting.

These drivers include part of a font by Design Systems that comes with
TOPS NetPrint, so I cannot give them away. However, if you are a NetPrint
owner and want these drivers, send me email (Les_Ferch@mtsg.ubc.ca).

Subject: Using a Cache

I'm trying to use a cache (PC-KWIK) on my 640k xt. I ran into a problem
and hope for some good explanation and possible solution.

I tried to install my cache to the smallest possible size by sending the
instruction: SUPERPCK /S:64. All looked promising, but when I loaded my
word processor (Nota Bene) and made it to use the D drive for its
overflow, I immediately ran into space problems. I checked using DIR and
got a report that Directory D has 13312 bytes free. I run a more detailed
report using FREE and got the following information: 128000 bytes total
disk space, 114688 bytes allocated, 13312 bytes available on disk. I
wonder, when did I allocate these 114688 bytes?

Did I do anything wrong with PC-KWIK? Is there anything I can do to make
the use of a cache possible on my system? (Other than increasing memory,
which requires a replacement of the MB).
