Subject: Problems with HDI

I had numerous problems with HARD DRIVES INTERNATIONAL. Their shipping
is chaotic, never received what I ordered, what I did receive never worked
and the technical support was lousy. Every time I called customer service
I was put on hold for about 30 minutes. When I called tech support, I was
put on hold for long periods. That was not a toll free call. Wasted about
$40 on phone calls, shipping and handling.

TO EVERYBODY WHO IS BUYING A HARD DRIVE DO NOT FALL FOR THE BARGAIN OF HDI
IT IS NOT WORTH IT. THEY SELL YOU THE WORST DRIVES AND YOU GET THE WORST
SERVICE IN THE BUSINESS.

Subject: Problems with HDI

I had heard a few good reviews from magazines about HDI before I
decided to purchase from them. I recieved my first drive about 2 weeks
late. Then there was a problem with the controller card. I got it
exchanged by 2nd day air shipment. Then I realized there was a problem
with the drive and the second card so I sent back both. After one month
and repeated phone calls I got my second replacement card and drive. This
one did not work either. I called the technical assistance number but they
did not know what to do either. This call was not toll free and I was put
on hold for periods of up to 15 minutes) and . Finally I tried to return
the drive for credit.

Then started my biggest problem. They received my drive and lost my
paper work. It took until September 23rd before I received my refund.

Finally I ordered a drive from a computer store in my town and received it
in 5 days. It works great! I paid about $50 more than HDI but I am very
happy I did it.

I HAVE BOUGHT FROM MANY MAILORDER COMPANIES BUT NONE OF THEM ARE AS BAD,
CHAOTIC AND INFERIOR QUALITY AS HARD DRIVES INTERNATIONAL.

I fully concur with Curt. Since replies may overlap, I think that the

posting them to the Digest.

Subject: Index of SIMTEL20 MSDOS files updated

The index of SIMTEL20 MSDOS files, with descriptions, has been updated.
The file is PD1:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS>SIMIBM.IDX. An archived version of the
same file is in PD1:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS>SIMIBM.ARC.

A list of all files in the MSDOS archives is contained in directory
PD1:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS> as follows:

SIMIBM.IDX contains a listing of all files that have a one line
description. This file is updated at approximate 1-2 week
       intervals (more frequently, time permitting).

NODESCR.IDX a listing of those files which do not have a description.

SIMIBM.ARC contains the latest SIMIBM.HDR, SIMIBM.IDX, NODESCR.IDX,
     AAAREAD.ME (this file), SIMCVT.BAS, SIMCVT2.BAS, SIMCVT3.BAS,
     SIMIBM.DB3, SIMIBM.HDR, SIMIBM.INF, SIMDISP.AWK, SIMDISP.DOC,
and SIMDISP.FOR. SIMIBM.ARC is updated at approximate 1-2 week
     intervals (more frequently, time permitting).

Also available:

QUICKREF.LST a quick reference list to SIMTEL20 MSDOS directories.

SIMCVT.BAS a BASICA/GWBASIC program to convert SIMIBM.IDX to a human-
readable text file. See also SIMCVT2.BAS and SIMCVT3.BAS.

SIMCVT.EXC a VM/CMS REXX program to print SIMIBM.IDX

SIMCVT.FOR a VAX/VMS FORTRAN program to print SIMIBM.IDX

SIMCVT.SPS a VAX/VMS SPS program to print SIMIBM.IDX

SIMDISP.AWK an awk script for displaying SIMIBM.IDX in outline form.

SIMDISP.DOC explains how to use SIMDISP.AWK.

SIMIBM.DB3 tells how to use SIMIBM.IDX with dBASEIII.

SIMIBM.HDR a PC-File+ database header for use with SIMIBM.IDX.

SIMIBM.INF information on record structure of SIMIBM.IDX.

SIMRAZ12.ARC a program to merge, shorten, rearrange SIMTEL indices.

SIMTEL31.ARC a program which will import any SIMTEL20 comma-delimited
catalog file and convert it to a .DBF and allow viewing, searching,
printing reports, etc. The user does not need dBASE and all the
necessary files will be created as they are needed by the program.

FILDIF.ARC a program for comparing a previous copy of PD1:<MSDOS>FILES.IDX
with a new copy. It displays files added and deleted since you got an
older index. This is useful if you are trying to maintain an archive
in sync with SIMTEL20. It can generate output scripts for batch FTP
     processing.

PD1:<MSDOS>FILES.IDX is updated on a daily basis (sometimes several times
a day when a lot of new files are uploaded). This file is a comma-
delimited file, without descriptions, suitable for importing into
     PC-File+ or DBase III.

It's impossible to make a daily updated list with descriptions with the
quantity of new programs available. We average about 300 new files per
month.

files (including hidden ones), leaving others untouched. Can anyone
supply me with more information? We have a real need for just such a

[The program was originally written by PC Magazine and published in the
May 13, 1986 issue. It may be available in file PD1:<MSDOS.DIRUTL>NO.ARC.
A companion file called SWEEP may be available in file
PD1:<MSDOS.DIRUTL>SWEEP221.ARC. Both programs are available from PC
Magazine on Vol 1 of their utilities diskette.

The description of NO is: "Makes a DOS command act on all but a specified

Subject: ctags program for MS-DOS?

Has anyone have a pointer to version of the *nix utility ctags which runs
on MS-DOS? (For those who don't know what I'm talking about, ctags
extracts information about the locations of function and structure
definitions from a set of C source files; this information can then be
used by one's editor to easily go to the place in the source where a
function is defined.)

I've had a look at the PCTAGS package recently uploaded to Simtel, and I
don't like it much: it uses a non-standard tag-file format, and so isn't
compatible with the built-in tags-parsing capability of my editor (JOVE).
It also uses on-purpose annoyances to get you to register, which I find
just a little bit offensive.

Any help appreciated; I'd prefer PD with source, but sometimes one has to
settle for less....

Subject: expert system shell survey

Hi, (this is a query for PC-based expert systems shells)

We, at the university of Wageningen, try to build EXPERT SYSTEMS on PC's.
As a part of the curriculum, students try to add knowledge to one of the
expert systems we attempt to build. For these we use at the moment
Acquaint, Prolog (also on VAX) and Turbo Prolog. This way the student and
we get to know what building an expert system really means.

Since we use students, every student has to learn how to use the shell or
the language, and how to formulate the knowledge in such a way that it is
understandable and modifyable. Therefore our tools must be easy to learn,
relatively bugfree and be accompanied by proper documentation. Our
systems become fairly large and use, for comprehensability, the available
means for data & knowledge abstraction. On our PC's (640K) we run out of
memory. Therefore we welcome suggestions for other shells that might be
suitable for us.

If you have experience with an expert system shell on a PC, would you
please mail me a short summary of your experiences, including:

Name of the shell and company.

Learning curve: Quality of documentation, as reference and as tutorial.
Is it up to date? How long does it take to learn. Quality and
availability of other forms of support.

Ease of use: Quality of the product, amount of bugs, are known bugs
reported, speed, options for testing, inference procedures, availabity of
form filling, abstraction mechanisms and types of explanation facilities.
Implementation issues: can the product use extended memory, or is there an
option for disk swapping, can you use modules, that are sepeartely loaded
and and unloaded. In short: how large can the knowledge base be?
