People used to complain that they could never reach me by telephone; Call Waiting solved this problem more cheaply than a second line. It was very easy to determine that the modem had hung up - if I was looking at the screen. I rarely missed a call this way, and because of the way VM/CMS handles disconnects, rarely lost data and never lost serious amounts of data. Two important considerations: 1.If I had to leave the terminal I logged off, in case an incoming call would bump the system. 2. phone calls had to be limited in time: If the call would take more than ten minutes I told the caller I would call back in a few minutes, reconnected, logged off and returned the call. The limitation in time is due to the possibility, never zero, of a system failure, and to the limitation on the time the CMS account would run disconnected in this situation. (I think it was half an hour). This was a solution in a temporary situation. I also kept the phone clear at high-volume times, and used the call-waiting cancellation feature when it was most important to do so. A further note: the local telephone company here may be introducing call waiting in my neighborhoood but at the same time will introduce a charge for local calls based on length of time connected. Rather than facilitate modem connection to the mainframe this will virtually kill it! Seth Ward ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Dec 89 12:54 EST From: S. They say they'll support it These instructions are for how to use version 9.3 of fractint (or earlier) with Hercules. Create a file called "fractint.cfg" containing the single line: Hercules , 8, 0, 0, 0, 1, 720, 348, 2, Requires MSHERC.COM and place it somewhere in your path. Run the program msherc.com before running fractint. This is a resident program that adds bios support for Hercules. It comes with the Microsoft C compiler, and may be distributed freely (so I am told) with Microsoft C applications (which FRACTINT is). The Hercules mode will be invoked with "F1" key. A few functions are rough - e.g. zoom box shape and help function, but the program should be usable. I am NOT uploading msherc.com to SIMTEL for the simple reason that FRACTINT version 10 is now available as (PD1:<MSDOS.GRAPHICS>FRAINT10.ARC). This version has intrinsic Hercules support. Also, version 11 will be ready soon. I am a FRACTINT co-author and am very happy to correspond with any users. I can be reached at m17329@mwvm.mitre.org or twegner@mwunix.mitre.org. I have an Epson LQ800 printer connected to an AT-clone, a Mitac 2000VE (16 mHz 80286) with one parallel port. The PRINTER WILL NOT PRINT WITH THIS COMPUTER, but it will with my IBM model 80. The Mitac will print with my HP Laserjet II and with a friend's LQ850, but IT WILL NOT PRINT WITH THE LQ800. I've tried three different parallel cables, sent the computer to Mitac for a checkup (of course it worked fine there and printed to a printer!) and talked with Epson, Inc. who told me that there is no difference in the design of the parallel input between the 800 and 850 models. The computer and the printer give every indication of having an electrical connection. When I boot the computer, the printer homes and makes the sounds that it usually does. But when I tell it to print, it won't do a thing. I've tried the DOS print command. I've tried copying files to LPT1 and everything from the computer side indicates that printing is in progress except for the fact that the printer remains motionless! Help me get rid of this devil before it infests my other equipment. Please, before I fall to the temptation to connect both printer and computer to my Alpha and see how long the demon survives key-down 1500 watts of rf. I've been trying forever, and I haven't been able to do it. >Please get back to me with any Ideas, I would really appreciate it. I have successfully saved PostScript files from PC applications, uploaded them to a VAX/VMS computer, and printed them to an LPS040. Each PostScript application seems to have its own pecularities to prevent the process from being straight forward. MS Word requires a PostScript initialization file to setup various macros to read its pseudo Postscript implementation. Without the "DECLN03R.INI" or "POSTSCRP.INI" file preceding it the Word PostScript is meaningless. The initialization file is NOT automatically included when you print the file to disk. First upload the ".INI" file to the VAX. You can then print the whole business like... PRINT/QUE=LPS040 DECLN03R.INI+MYFILE.PS Some applications print (or save) PostScript files as one continuous stream of characters without line breaks. The VAX/VMS file management will NOT allow line lengths over 4000 characters. Borland's Quattro is an example of this. You need to edit the file to add the line breaks prior to uploading them. (Anyone written is utility to do this?) Lastly, be aware that the LPS040 does NOT support all 35 font types typically resident on other PostScript printers. The LPS040 will abort if you try to use them. (I believe the ones that were left out can be ordered from DEC.) However, when I attempt to get a directory of the ANONYMOUS account there, I get nothing in response. However, when I use the command MGET, files appear at the prompt. That is a *very* messy way to get a file listing from that site...(BTW, there is no "help" file in the anonymous account there, either...not too helpful on trying to find out what else is stored there...) [The MAIN problem with the site is that ALL mail sent to <info-IBMPC-*@A.ISI.EDU> or <...@C.ISI.EDU> is sent onto WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL. The other problems can be answered by saying that the Info-IBMPC files were moved to WSMR-Simtel20 about 4 years ago. The old contents of the directory have been archived off-line and without the messages from the system telling where they are, no one can get at them. Not to worry though, ALL the Info-IBMPC files were moved (EXCEPT for the .EEL stuff and that has been recovered.) gph] I've tried mailing a message to the operator of that site. No response, although there is a mail file in the ANONYMOUS directory that shows that the FTP files are being maintained (latest update on 8-6-89). My questions: what commands work at that that site to get a directory of what is there? And is it really worth my while to scream about this issue? [Nothing will work. Yesterday I got the file LOADALL.TXT which was send to me by email by an unknown sender. This file contains a description of the LOADALL instruction, an undocu- mented instruction of the INTEL 80286 processor. In the LOADALL.TXT file it is stated that, by means of this undocumented instruction, it is possible to execute real mode programs within the protected mode of the 80286, even concurrently to other protected mode programs. The file contains a (that's my impression!) rather detailed description of the services a real mode emulator program (a kind of operating system for the execution of real mode software within protected mode I think) has to provide and what kind of rules it has to obey. Because I'm not an expert in assembly language programming I think that it is not easy for me to build such an emulator program within a reasonable time although I'm strongly interested in it. Has anyone heard of the existence of such a program? If yes, please let me know, where I can get it (commercial vendors too). Also I'm interested in your opinion about the information in the LOADALL.TXT file (I think many of you have got it too!). Would it also be possible to execute concurrently SEVERAL real mode programs by such an emulator? I think in this case such an emulator program could be a great concurrent to the 386-multitasking programs like VM386 or DESQVIEW 386 because it could run already on the millions of cheap 80286 AT clones. Many thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to your answers. Hans-Georg Hans-Georg Reusch Institut f. Currently I am using YTerm 2.1 on a PC which serves as an excellent communications package. However the mainframe file transfer module (PCTrans 1.3) appears to handle transfers in small non-variable blocks of between 300 and 400 bytes which I would suspect to be slower than a streaming transfer protocol such as ZModem. And so, the questions: I. Does anyone know of an implementation of the ZModem protocol for the VM/CMS system? II. Does anyone have any knowledge of the ease (or impossibility) of modifying an application of ZModem to work on VM/CMS? III. Can anyone shed a more educated light on my suspicions that ZModem would offer improvements over the currently available binary file transfer protocols? (I have had little experience with the more commonly used Kermit but suspect that it operates similarly to PCTrans.) All inputs, no matter what the block size, will be greatly appreciated. S.
