Subject: Access to libraries

At the beginning of the newletter it mentions the Lending Library. How
can I access them. I am on Internet and I can use FTP or remote login to
the system. Do I need an account and a password or is there an open access
for these librarys?

[Use your FTP process to connect to WSMR-SIMTEL20.AMRY.MIL. When using
FTP, use account ANONYMOUS, and although a password of GUEST is perfectly
acceptable, use of <your-name@your-host> is preferred. (This is known as
ANONYMOUS LOGIN.)

Use a command in your FTP process that equates to TYPE ASCII when
retreiving TEXT files and TYPE 8 L (or TENEX) for BINARY files.]

Subject: AUTOEXEC protection

Mike Bunnle (MJB8949@RITVAX) wanted to know if there was a way to keep
users from ^C-ing out of his AUTOEXEC.BAT file at bootup. There is.

Add the line

CTTY >> BOOTUP.FIL

to the begining of your AUTOEXEC file. (Note: This method exploits a bug
in DOS that may or may not have been fixed in ver 4.XX) This keeps
control away from the consol and has the added benefit of creating a log
of the exvents of each bootup. If you want something echoed to the screen
or the output of a command to go to the screen then '> CON' must be append
to the line in question.

The last line of the batch file must be 'CTTY CON' so that controll may
once again be returned to the consol. Also note (and then ignore) that
the first line of the created log file will be 'Invalid Device'.

Subject: AT drive problems

Edward Mueller (EMUELLER@SKVAK1.TI.COM) Had a question concerning drive
failiure in an AT clone. This may or may not be related but...

The first generation IBM AT had a soldered-in crystal. IBM did this to
keep people from dropping in higher frequency crystals because they had
had problems with the drives (intermitent) when the machines were run at
faster clock speeds. A friend of mine has a first generation AT in which
an accelorator card was placed. He sometimes (though not to often) has
the same problems with his drives that you do with yours.

If your AT is speed selectable, you might try running the machine at a
slower speed and see if the problems persist.

This program is in the issue archive for volume 8, number 1.
Specifically, it's part of

          pd1:<msdos.pcmag>vol8n01.arc

I attempted to use BCOPY in several different scenarios and was
disappointed in its performance. The primary use I had in mind for the
program was to use it to populate my RAMdisk while allowing my
AUTOEXEC.BAT to execute in parallel. I have since resolved the RAMdisk
populate problem by other means. I discovered that by the time I got
BCOPY loaded and some requests in its queue, the overall time savings
compared to straight copies in the foreground was not significant.

On the other hand, if you have some usage scenarios involving a lot of
copying, the program will probably be very useful.

Subject: KEY-FAKE

Soon after posting my query on KEY-FAKE, I downloaded a file named
KEYFAKE.ARC from SIMTEL20. In addition to KEY-FAKE, it had a similar
program, FAKEY, with documentation, which was more detailed than that for
KEY-FAKE. For reasons I don't understand, not being a programmer in micro
assembly language, it works with WORDSTAR 5 and QEDIT where KEY-FAKE
doesn't. In both of these programs, if you try to feed in commands to open
a document file, for QEDIT, or to log onto other than the default drive,
for WS5, KEY-FAKE stops with a character which resembles a single musical
note. FAKEY, however, succeeds in feeding commands to either QEDIT or WS5
after the program has started.

While I realize that Wordstar will let you set up to open in
non-document mode by default, I wanted to set up a batch file for a menu
so that WS5 would log over to drive A:, without using WSCHANGE to make
that the default drive.

FAKEY.COM, with a date of 6-9-86, apparently is the one to use when
KEY-FAKE can't do the job.

Does anyone know where I can get a program to boot off of the B: drive? I
have a 286 clone with a 1.44 Meg B drive and was would like to be able to
boot off it without changing the cables. I have seen a program that allows
a PS/2 to boot off the external 5 1/4 drive. I ran it on my computer, but
it crashed. I am also looking for a program that will allow me to read
different disk formats (ie. Amiga or Mac). I think that the CopyII PC
board can read Mac disks, but I would also like to be able to read/write
Amiga disks, if possible. Any replies would be most appreciated. :-)

Subject: Formating a Second Hard-Disk

I am working with an original IBM-AT (Model at 6mhz/piggyback rams/CMI
20meg hard disk) and have tried twice to hook up a hard disk to drive D.
The first was a Seagate 251-1 (40 meg MFM) and the second was a 10 meg
device which looks just the same as the original device put in some early
AT's and direct from factory XT's

The problem being this: (For the 10 meg device)

  1) The drive selects properly
  2) The drive is recognized by the Seagate Utilities or IBM Diags and
     formats
  3) F-Disk recnizes the drive and allows the entire volume to be dedicated
     to a DOS partician
  4) DOS refuses to format the media!

Any ideas? The machine has been upgraded in ways which I don't think
should impact this type of upgrade, as follows:

  1) 3.5 meg of total memory installed
  2) Inboard 386/AT installed
  3) 387-16 installed
  4) Herculese Graphics Card Clone installed
  5) Microway 287Turbo Plus installed (Still using to control motherboard
Speed and provide hardware reset without cycling the machine down
  6) Drive B is 360kb
  7) CopyiiPC option board installed
  8) Microsoft bus mouse installed
  9) Serial/Parallel/Game board installed (Clock disabled,Parallel Disabled)

That should be a complete enough list.

An additional problem not related to above but on the same machine with
regards to binary printing. If I use copy /b on a large file (over about
200kb) I end up with garbage printing on the screen. Just a few
characters here and there which do not cause any problems other than being
there. Has anyone else had this problem?

Subject: Opinions on VGA Monitors

Greetings all. I am preparing to purchase a new VGA monitor, and would
appreciate any opinions anyone would like to offer.

I need only analog, no digital as I'll be using strictly true vga(+).

my questions are: does anyone feel strongly about a particular brand of
monitor? (price/quality/performance, the usuals :-)) I don't need
super-hi-res, I'm not doing any cad. I'm thinking the standard for
non-engineering purposes is 800x600x16 (altho 256 colors would be nice).
But I'm starting to wonder. I don't see many drivers to use 800x600 16 or
256. so maybe sticking with 640x480 is better.

Opinions welcome!!!

Does anyone know of any third-party hard disks for an IBM PS/2 Model 50?
A while back, I seem to recall a third-party outfit somewhere offering a
direct replacement for the IBM 20M, it was a 49M drive. I also seem to
recall seeing an external Seagate system, that would run with the existing

Any information on ANY third-party drives that will work in an IBM PS/2

GC-DESC.ARC Describes conference/mail door for RBBS

Long description: GRAND CENTRAL MESSAGE SYSTEM 0.95 - GC is a
high-performance door which replaces the native conference and mail
functions of the RBBS program. It features a full-screen user interface,
a topic-based message system, a powerful editor, and more.

Thanks, Scott!
