Subject: Limit(s) on Number of Open Files

First, I appologize for taking so long to reply; I was frustrated enough
after banging my head against the problem for 2 days, and yet I've waited a
week to reply.

I finally called Microsoft. Within 5 minutes, I learned:

a) the upper limit is set by the operating system AND by two routines in one
of the libraries,

b) how to get around the problem, and

c) the problem and its solution are discussed in the reference manual
(section C.3.1 Increasing the Maximum Number of Open Files in my copy) and
the README file that came with the compiler (i.e., RTM!!!)

Basically, the i/o libraries that came with my compiler set the upper limits
for both the number of units and the number of file handles to 20. The upper
limits for DOS are 20, so we are stuck under DOS. However, the upper limits
for OS/2 are approximately 40. By reading the manual and fiddling, I
succeeded in increasing the limit. I can't remember details, but can pass
along two hints: use the LARGE model when assembling CRT0DAT (one of the two
utilities that need to be modified); the manual is right when it says you
need MASM 5.1 (not earlier versions, but I can't remember why).

I'm using Microsoft Fortran 5.0 under IBM OS/2 EE 1.1.

Since SARAH-LITE is written byt the folks at the Command and Control
Systems Center at Tinker AFB, why not give them a call with the problem. The
only number I have is the Program Manager telephone. Try autovon 884-3207.
Not sure who the program manager is now, but just ask for the SARAH PM and
you will get pointed in the right direction.

PS: I use to work in that office, and that is the only reason I know the
number.

Hmmmm... I already have a partial solution to this problem -- if you point
the environment EMACS to a ramdisk, it will load its files off of it. Then a
variable is used to determine the "real" location of the documentation files,
etc. However, it wants to load ALL of its files from the ramdisk. I think a
better solution would be to define the EMACS variable as a path like the PATH
variable. Then, when files are saved, or documentation loaded, the last
component of the path will be used.

Then you can set EMACS=d:\emacs;c:\emacs

We have been having alot of problems with memory and Aldus. The system is
a 286 with 2Mb and windows 2.11. Unless we leave off the Bornulii (sp?)
driver we can not use soft fonts. And even then we can not use diagonal
lines, rounded boxes, shading, or circles. We also have the HP laserJet II
with 2.5Mb of RAM. Spending several hours on the phone with Aldus left us
with no solution and they indicated they had never run in to this problem
before. Don't they know their users talk to each other?

Subject: Adding an additional hard drive to Dell 210

I purchased a Dell System 210 at the end of the summer. It's a pretty good
machine and I've had good luck with it, but alas I purchased only a 40 meg
hard drive. Needless to say, its been filled up. I want to expand my hard
drive options, but I have what is known as an IDE drive. The people at Dell
tell me that the only drives I am able to use are additional 40 meg drives
with a 1:1 interleave factor.

The two models they suggested are:
Seagate ST-157A-1
Conner CP344

I have been unable to find these drives anywhere! Can anyone help me locate
a supplier, or suggest an alternative? I'd like to keep the cost as low as
possible, and use the existing 'controller' board if possible. My existing
drive has an access time of approximately 26 ms. and I'd like to keep the
performance of the new drive the same.

The problem, it seems, is the use of IDE drives. If it were a normal RLL or
SCSI drive, buying a replacement would be easy, wouldn't it? Anyhow, I'm
looking for any expansion options possible.

Thanks in advance!

Subject: How to Limit Access to Hard Drive?

Question: We are looking for a way to limit access to a hard drive through
means of password protection software. (or something along those lines)

Physically restricting access has not proved to be a viable solution. for
various reasons. The only product I have found which has this feature is
Inmac Kinetic Access which uses a menu system and passwords to restrict user
access to the hard drive (even if you boot from a floppy) Any comments on
this package? Or alternative solutions? Thanks in advance!

Subject: Keyboard and memory errors

I've got two problems. I've got an Epson Equity I+ with 30 meg hard drive,
CGA monitor, 1 5 1/4 floppy drive, Avetex modem on COM1, Microsoft Mouse on
COM2, and my AUTOEXEC loads a Command Editor, Mouse drivers, and LOG.COM.

Problem 1) My PF11 and PF12 keys don't work on my AT style keyboard. My
ver. of DOS is 3.2. It comes with DIAGSYS.COM and DIAG.COM. When I run the
keyboard check with these two progs, they tell me my keyboard is fine. Does
anyone know of a better diagnostic program that might find the error?

Problem 2) When I run a memory check, the program simply tells me "EXEC
failed." It doesn't give me the address of the bad memory. Then when I run
a CRT and video memory check, it tells me: "V-RAM error -" then gives me an
address of the bad memory. The manual says this error is from DOS trying to
write information from the screen to memory and then trying to read it back.
This test fails. My question is, is this the same memory location that the
memory test fails on? Can anyone be more specific as to what my problem is?
Or does anyone know of a program that would give me more specific error
messages?
