The PC Magazine Dos Power Tools to which Jack Rupert refers is terrific.
However, it is available widely for $20 (rather than the $40 I paid a few
hours before coming across it for $20!).

As to Marshall Feldman's request re: laptops, I see a Zenith (actual) 386
advertised for $3000. It has obviously been remaindered and must have some
shortcomings, but if I had $3000, I wouldn't have it for long.

It's a typo. Sorry about that. The filename is SIMIBM.ARC.

If by LIST, you mean Vern Berg's LIST, all you have to do is mark the entire
file after using the 7 option to strip the high bit, and then write the
marked lines to disk with Alt-D.

Recently, there was a question asked by someone who was looking for the
specs/format for TIFF files.

There is a file in the SIMTEL archives, in directory pd:<msdos.graphics>
called TIFF-50.ARC.

It is an archive that contains the specs for version 5 TIFF files. It
should answer any questions about the format of a TIFF file.

Now I have a question........There is an archive in the <msdos.c> directory
called CTASK20.ARC. It is an excellent look at a multitasker written in C
and ASM.

My problem is this: I received the file (a >300K monster!!)...but the
TSKMAIN.C file was corrupted. I don't feel like sending for the whole thing
again if i dont have to....

If there is anyone who has received this archive (and file) intact, and
can mail me the ASCII file TSKMAIN.C, I would greatly appreciate it...

I recommend PC-VT as a communications program for anyone who wants to emulate
a DEC terminal. You can capture a file or a session easily, as well as do
XMODEM or Kermit (with an external Kermit) transfers. It's a very good DEC
emulation, and a lot less demanding of disk space than Procomm and other such
programs (important if you don't have a hard disk). It is shareware, should
be easy to find on a BBS or from SIMTEL.

I need a BASIC compiler, which should be possibly 100% consistent with
Interpreter BASIC. More specifically, the compiler should be able to
understand CHAIN "xxxx.xxx",,all. I use also lots DIM. I tried QuickBasic
and TurboBasic, no success. Any help will be highly appreciated.

Subject: Halt on AT boot

I have a boot problem with my AST AT. After the conventional 640 RAM is
checked at upon the cold boot, the boot stops, system completly freezes. The
screen resembles:

00640 RAM AVAILABLE

...with the cursor stuck on the last "0." Conventional RAM error? The
following hardware-check bombed?

The error occurs rarely, but when it does happen, a cold start results in the
same outcome, unless I leave the AT alone for a few minutes. Sound strange?
Does to me.

Subject: Old Burroughs Equipment (Query)

A local bank is discarding some old computer equipment, and I'm trying to
find out if it's any good. Can anyone give me details about the following
equipment:

Burroughs B20 running BTOS 2.3.0
Burroughs TA1800 family (modem)

The machine looks like a self-contained microcomputer; it has an internal
5.25" floppy drive, and *sounds* like it contains a hard drive as well. Any
information you can provide is appreciated.

Subject: Problems with QuickBasic 4.50

a friend of mine has a problem with QuickBasic 4.50: whereas this compiler
officialy recognizes Olivetti's (=AT&T's) screen mode 4 (640x400), it does
not, however, do so if the machine is an Olivetti M200 (Olivetti computers
are sold in the USA by AT&T.)

on all other machines we've tried (Olivetti M24, M240, M28, M280, M380)
programs relying on screen mode 4 work fine.

all pointers to solutions, be it from Olivetti/AT&T/Borland or users, are
welcome. i suggest replies be sent directly to me, as the subject seems of
rather restricted scope.

Subject: Scanned Image to plotter

Can anyone give me a lead on how to convert a scanned image (with much
grey-scale) to plotter output. I realize the technologies are somewhat
antagonistic (scanner=raster, plotter=vector) but the need is real. Will
consider commercial and public domain/shareware solutions but would also like
references to the techniques (books, articles, etc.)

Subject: Tandy 1000 SL/TL DAC Sound Chip Support

Does anyone know of any programs, besides Tandy's DeskMate Sound Program,
that will take advantage of the DAC sound chip in Tandy 1000 SL and TL series
computers? I want to be able to make batch files talk or be able to hear
sound files without having to go all the way into DeskMate. These computers
have been out for a year and a half so I thought somebody had programed a
little utility for using the DAC chips power by now.
