"A Visually-Programmed Animation System for Models of Manufacturing"

Factory-Mate is a modelling and animation system for discrete
manufacturing. Models are constructed with a direct manipulation
interface, run as animations and analyzed graphically. It was rapidly
prototyped and incrementally evolved using the object-oriented language
C++. The claims of rapid production, easily customizable and robust code
as the result of object-oriented development have been positively
demonstrated by this system. Results from beta test sites suggest that
animation could become a new tool for the communication of management
information. Some issues regarding user interface design and visual
programming will be raised. Finally, some relationships to the
specification of distributed real-time systems will be discussed.
