WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL can be accessed using LISTSERV commands from BITNET via LISTSERV@NDSUVM1, LISTSERV@RPIECS and in Europe from EARN TRICKLE servers. Send commands to TRICKLE@<host-name> (example: TRICKLE@TREARN). The following TRICKLE servers are presently available: AWIWUW11 (Austria), BANUFS11 (Belgium), DKTC11 (Denmark), DB0FUB11 or DTUZDV1 (Germany), IMIPOLI (Italy), EB0UB011 (Spain), TAUNIVM (Israel), and TREARN (Turkey). SIMTEL20 is not accessable on the first Wednesday of each month from 6-8pm Eastern Standard Time. If you are unable to access SIMTEL20 via Internet FTP or through one of the BITNET/EARN file servers, most MSDOS SIMTEL20 files, including the PC-Blue collection, are available for downloading on the Detroit Download Central network at 313-885-3956. DDC is a networked system with multiple lines that support 300, 1200, 2400, and 9600 bps (HST). This system is a subscription system with an average hourly cost of 17 cents per hour. It is also accessable on Telenet via PC Pursuit and on Tymnet via StarLink outdial. New files uploaded to WSMR-SIMTEL20 are usually available on DDC within 24 hours. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 31 Jul 90 5:02 -0500 From: Dan Fandrich <shad04@ccu.umanitoba.ca> Subject: 3 1/2 drives that you can format from DD to HD > While you're discussing HD 3 1/2 drives reading 720s, which brands >allow you to format a 720K disk to 1.44 without punching a hole in the >disk like IBM's PS/2 drives (what ever brand they are?) The Mitsubishi MF35x I'm using doesn't have the media sensor hole. Because I use both 720k disks (at 720k, not pushed to 1.44MB) and regular high-density 1.44MB disks, I was forced to install a toggle switch to switch between the two densities. On more than one occasion I've munged disks by writing to them with the switch set wrong. If you're going to be working with both disk capacities, I wouldn't recommend this route. However, if you're going to push all your 720k disks to 1.44MB (something I'm rather leery about) let's get together and swap drives! >>> Dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 90 08:56:47 IST From: Ran Cheremsh <CHERMESH%BGUVM.BITNET@UBVM.cc.buffalo.edu> Subject: BATCHMAN Hi, In a recent IBMPC-L Digest a response from MicroSoft referred to a PC-Mag program named BATCHMAN, an advanced substitute to WHAT. This prefix is CompuServe's generalized gateway access syntax, and does not appear in headers on the Internet side of the gateway. Some additional information regarding addressing sites Out Here can be obtained via "help internet" in their mailer. There is no charge to anyone for use of this gateway. CompuServe subscribers are still billed their usual hourly rate for connect time, but there is no gateway-specific surcharge. Hope this helps... Camp) Subject: Converting tar.Z files to Dos format I have a couple of compress.exe versions that I can make available. One is a 12-bit version and the other uses all 16 bits. The 12 bit version is not very useful with most downloaded software, because they are usually compressed with 16 bits. It does run in a lot less memory than the 16 bit version, which requires nearly all TSR's to be removed. I am somewhat limited at the moment because I do not have access to a Dos machine. I can send you what I have online and let you determine which version is which. -David- Internet: david%wubios@wugate.wustl.edu ^ David J. They include controllers for MFM, RLL, ESDI, etc. drives. Because of the large market for these drives, you should have no trouble buying a cheap drive once you have the controller. -David- Internet: david%wubios@wugate.wustl.edu ^ David J. Hi there, I run a BBS in my country, but I have the folowing problem: Here it is rather difficult to get a new telephone line (it is VERY difficult). I have one line free 24hours but my FAX is connected to that, so I need to connect BOTH my FAX and my MODEM to the same telephone line. Is there any kind of device that would accomplish this? What I need is a device that would sense whether the incoming call was data or fax and switch OFF the line the other device. I need this URGENTLY!!! If it helps, a note about my equipment: Toshiba TF-211 Group III facsmile Hayes-compatible 2400baud modem. The line use rotary (pulse) dial and NOT tone. Can anybody give me a helping hand? I really need to do that... Thank you all in advance... Perry <mdperry@boulder.Colorado.EDU> Subject: Info request for Power C compiler I recently received a package of postcards from BYTE magazine; each card contains advertising info on a specific product and one of these sounds too good to be true. For $19.95 MIX software will send you the Power C compliler with features like: make, linker, libraries (10 bucks more), 600 page manual, ANSI std., IEEE floating point, automatic register variables, supports all graphics. They also show a small chart comparing Power C with Microsoft C and Borland's Turbo C, needless to say Power C is comparable or faster in every category. I have never bought a compiler before but am considering this one. I would be interested in learning if anyone else has used this program, particularly if you have also used a higher priced compiler and can compare the two. Obviously for 20 bucks you don't get a friendly environment with a built in editor and lots of toggling back and forth to test things and debug them etc. But do I really need those things if I am not a developer? I have been running a Model 70 A21 with a open case because I use a Nth Generation Systems connector to have both two 3.5" drives and one 1.2 meg 5.25" drive. Does someone have a way I can get this same function and close my 70's case? While I'm at it does anyone use the 32 bit card port for anything good? Right now I've got a 3Com 3C523 card and a 8514/a adapter card.
