If you are unable to access SIMTEL20 via Internet FTP or through one of
the BITNET/EARN file servers, most MSDOS SIMTEL20 files, including the
PC-Blue collection, are available for downloading on the Detroit
Download Central network at 313-885-3956. DDC is a networked system
with multiple lines that support 300, 1200, 2400, and 9600 bps (HST).
This system is a subscription system with an average hourly cost of 17
cents per hour. It is also accessible on Telenet via PC Pursuit and on
Tymnet via StarLink outdial. New files uploaded to WSMR-SIMTEL20 are
usually available on DDC within 24 hours.

Subject: high density drive(s) in XT (COMMODORE PC 10-III and others)

Here's the solution for the discussed problem (see subject above):

Use an extra floppy-controller card like the FDC-440 and disable the
on-board controller from the XT mainboard (can be done by setting some
dip-switches in PC 10-III).

The FDC-440 by ACC microelectronics, Taipei, supports up to 4 (four)
drives with 4 different drive types (3.5" 720KB/1.44MB and 5.25"
360KB/1.2MB). The FDC-440 has it's own enhanced FDC-BIOS on board, so
there are no problems or conflicts with old XT-BIOS versions.

FDC-440 works in modern 286, 386 and 486 systems, too. The advantage
is that 4 drives can be installed in the system and be used
simultaneously with their own drive identifiers, e.g. 3 diskdrives with
letters A:, B: and C: and a harddisc with two partitions using letters
D: and E: .

The FDC-440 comes complete with two 4-way-sets drive-cabling and manual
(english).

PRICE ABOUT U.S.-$ 70 EACH.

I hope, this will help you with your old XT...

Subject: Microsoft C 5.1 and Spawn

A recent question was about a problem in using spawn. I have used it
successfully but there are a few dozen things that can go wrong. To
find out why the spawn is not working, extern for the MSC global errno.
Use a printf to print that after the spawn fails. Look in errno.h (in
your \C\INCLUDE subdirectory for the translation of the error code to a
letter error code, then go to Appendix A of your library manual and
look up the meaning of the code. It might tell you it couldn't find
the file to spawn to or any number of other problems.

This should get at what your problem really is.

I have installed QuarterDeck's QEMM expanded memory manager and can no
longer use Super Project Manager. SPJ (Super Project Manager) displays
an overlay loader error message stating that spj.exe is the wrong
version. Computer Associates owns this software, but they sure don't
act like it.

Subject: PC-Tools 6.0 Problems

I intended to use the pc-shell for management of my software archives
since it is very handy to work with a two-list display for seeing what
you are taking from one place and seeing at the same time what space
you have available at the place you are going to.

The program displays the total number of bytes you are selecting as
well as the available space on the target medium. Unfortunately the
overhead (I presume for dir and fat) is only calculated when you start
copying or moving. This means that you have to do your selection over
and over again before ending with a good shot.

Even this would do if the file selection would work properly. I select
with my mouse (a Genius GM-F301 mouse, full MS compatible, that works
very well on my 386sx 2Mb clone) but very often when including the next
item, I get the message " Extension is not EXE, COM or BAT and no
application association found". I can only respond with "continue" but
this unselects the whole list I had ready.

I had to repeat some selections of about 35 files up to 10 times before
I started doing it the old way (curser arrow keys and enter).

I even mutilated my hand temporarely by binding all fingers exept for 1
to the palm for not inadvertently touching a second mouse knob. I
experimented with rapid clicks, with deep clicks ... And I think I
have come to a point ..........

I need some help making this work.

Thanks for all of us.

Subject: ATI vs WINDOWS problem

I'm trying to get Windows 3.0 and my ATI VGA-wonder to work together in
386-mode. In 286-mode it works just fine, but when I try WIN/3 my
screen first displays the WINDOWS-logo just fine; then repaints the
logo in yellow and finally just fills the screen with a grey-toned
blockpattern, though the last sympton may vary according to the
switchsettings of the VGA-wondercard.

My computer has a DIGIS-386 board with 2 Meg RAM, which is generally
very well-behaved. The monitor is a cheapie multi-sync (but I cannot
imagine the problem is related to the monitor.

Any solutions/suggestions will be received gratefully.

Subject: Automatic toggling of Keyclick

Hello fellow PC users.

I have a Zenith Z-248 AT. The keyclick is toggled on/off by pressing
the <CTRL>ESC key combination. I would like to toggle the keyclick off
automatically at boot-up by executing a file from my AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
I have tried using several of the key simulation programs (KEY_FAKE and
others) but have yet to find one that will handle the <CTRL>ESC
combination.

Does anyone know of a way to do this using either a "KEY-FAKE"
thpe utility or possibly by writing an assembly program to somehow
control the keyclick function directly. Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know where I can find a public domain version of TCP/IP
that runs on ibm pc's (maybe even over token ring?).

Don't know if this is what you're looking for, but the following files
are available from WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL. From a 'grep' of
file SIMIBM.IDX using "TCP/IP" as a search pattern we find:

PD1:<MSDOS.NETWORK>
PCROUT20.ARC Make PC into TCP/IP router for about $450

PD1:<MSDOS.WINDOWS3>
W3PKTDR2.ZIP TCP/IP packet drivers for MS Windows 3

PD2:<MSDOS2.ARCNET-PCIP>
ARCNET.ARC Modified CMU PC/IP runs TCP/IP on ARCNET, 1of5
ARCNET.RFC Specs for running TCP/IP on ARCNET, 2of5
CUSTOM.ARC Part of ARCNET TCP/IP package, 3of5
INCLUDE.ARC Part of ARCNET TCP/IP package, 4of5
INTERNET.ARC Part of ARCNET TCP/IP package, 5of5

PD2:<MSDOS2.CMU-PCIP>
PCIP_PKT.ARC CMU PCIP TCP/IP for use with Clarkson drivers

PD2:<MSDOS2.NCSATELNET>
DRIVERSS.ZIP Clarkson drivers for NCSA Telnet & KA9Q TCP/IP

Hope one of these fills your requirements. gph]

Subject: novell API and usernames?

I have been writing some programs for novell in Turbo Pascal. I can
retreive the username plus many other pieces of info. I am trying to
pull the Fullname from the network. In syscon, the supervisor can
key-in the realname of an user. I have looked through the API manual,
but cannot figure out which function pulls the realname.

I don't want to spend months trying every API function. Novell seems
to use certain terms interchangably.

I don't need source. Simply state 'GetConnectionInfo' or whatever
function it might be.

If anyone is interested, I have a Turbo 5.5 pascal/novell unit. Send

Subject: Windows 3 and QEMM 5.1

Has anyone successfully used QEMM 5.1 and Windows 3 in enhanced 386
mode? Or has anyone even received shipment of version 5.1? I've seen
the ads claiming compatibility with the three modes of Windows 3.0, but
I'd like to hear some confirmation of those claims. Specifically, why
doesn't QEMM collide with HIMEM.SYS...do you end up using the HMA of
QEMM rather than HIMEM.SYS? Does SMARTDRV.SYS work properly in that
case?

I'm especially interested in hearing about using it in combination with
3Com's 3+Open net drivers, since they also try to use the high memory
area.

Any help is appreciated.
