Essentially they include the normal interface for the PC on the drive itself and the controller card you use is really basic - little more than a connector from the drive to the bus via one of the slots. Many manufacturers are offering IDE versions of their drives at really good value - for instance the Seagate ST-151 40MB IDE drive which is a great buy. I note you are using COHERENT; I am new to this list - are there many people using it / how well does it work / is there s/w available on BITNET for it? (I ordered it a few days ago and am looking forward to playing with it). Someone else responded that a hard disk should spin at 3600 RPM exactly. This is true, but remember that SpinRite may not report the speed exactly. I have an ST-238 that reports a speed of 3600.8 RPM, but I also have used SpinRite II 1.1 on an NEC Multispeed HD laptop that reported about 1800 RPMs (I believe...hard to remember..the important thing is that it's REALLY far off of the theoretical 3600 RPM). Here's the reason: SpinRite also reports that the NEC's hard disk uses the ARLL encoding scheme. I suspect that this fools SpinRite into thinking that the RPM is way off. (I assume that the hard disk is still spinning 3600 RPMs like it should) David Lemson d-lemson@uiuc.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Sep 90 15:13:07 MET From: matheu swartjes <U020049%HNYKUN11.BITNET@uga.cc.uga.edu> Subject: Re: OS/2 On Thu, 27 Sep 1990 14:39:41 MET <P7MAI016@FRCIRP81> said: >You can run OS/2 (1.1 or 1.2) with a 80286/12 + 2 MB of RAM; I mean it >will run but you will find too slow (too much swapping !). We want to install a 60MB Harddisk into this machine. The disk has a type of 47 which means 965 Cylinders with 5 Heads and 25 Sectors. The BIOS of the 286-Machine doesn't support such a type of disk. Are we able to read out the BIOS change one of the free locations in the setup table to our value and write it back into a new EPROM. Or is there any other chance to get such a drive together with a Compaq multipurpose fixed disk drive controller Type 000957 running in a AT-Clone? But we want to use the complete disk with 60MB's. A try with diskmanager only allows us to use the drive as a 42MB disk. Many thanks in advance. The driver i got with it is for EMS version 3.2. (EMS = Expanded Memory Specifications) To use this expanded memory with MSDOS 4.0 however, i need EMS version 4 (LIM). Is it possible just to use a newer version of the driver, or are there also hardware changes between version 3.2 and 4 ? Where can i find a driver for EMS 4 ? Hello, everybody. I manager a lab with some 25 IBM PS/2's at a small college. The machines are primarily used for standard word processing, spreadsheet work, and the like. Up until now, life has been pretty peaceful. However, the age of the PC virus has arrived. I am currently fighting off an attack of the Ping-Pong virus, and am not having much luck. What I need are suggestions on the best way to keep a room full of PC's virus-free. Particularly valuable would be names of programs that act to prevent the machines becoming infected in the first place, as GateKeeper and Vaccine do on the Mac. Please respond directly to me, and there seems to be interest, I will summarize the responses for the net. Thanks!
