I've been using Calendar Creator Plus from Power-Up! Software in San Mateo CA for the last year. It really does work very well and includes things like daily weekly, monthly, and yearly calendars. It lets you prioritize your entries and give each one a time slot. There are really too many options to describe here but I don't think you'll be disappointed by this one. It supports a number of printers (I use a NEC P6300 24 pin) and I think you'll find your printer is support (if not in postscript maybe just in emulation mode). I think I paid $35.00 for the package which included both 3 1/2 and 5 1/4 inch disks and a manual. Version 3.0 is the latest I'm aware of. Let me know how you like it. I'd highly recommend askSam (askSam Systems, Perry Florida). It's a "text" database which allows you to enter structured information ala a standard database or completely freeform text (good for the interview notes or an annotated bibilography). It is very easy to get started with but has a sophisticated programming capability for more advanced uses. Cost is about $295.00 but educational discounts are available for students registered in courses which use or teach the program. It is very fast and will run on any IBM compatible machine including an XT with two floppy drives (great for portables). A Mac version is NOT available but the information can be exported to an ASCII file. M. Is its serial number in the range 72-0000000 to 72-0640000 ?? If so, then you are eligible for a FREE Replacement/Repair from IBM !! Per IBM ECA-017, (extension dated 11/19/90), you can contact IBM and get your failing unit replaced. There is some question as to how 'fuzzy' is fuzzy, but it looks as if you can get your failing 8513, in the range above, replaced for free. Call your local IBM Dealer or IBM directly at 800-426-7378 for more details. If they don't know what you're talking about, have them get hold of the local IBM marketing rep., and ask them to look up the extension to ECA-017, of the IBM 8513/85XX series of ECAs dated 11/19/90. Proof of purchase may be required. Hurry as this is an extension and the offer will probably evaporate soon... Hope this helps someone with a dying 8513... later frank (this info was originally provided to me by another IBM customer.) Camp) Subject: Port of gcc generates code for MsDos (fwd) There has been an attempt to port the GNU gcc compiler to generate code for MsDos. The version as it exists is very broken, and fails to run when compiled for other architectures. The MASM code that it generates is not suitable for assembly, because it is mising certain directives. This version runs under Unix, and there are no plans to port the compiler itself to MsDos. If you are not interested in doing extensive work to improve and debug these changes, you should not bother downloading them. They are available on wuarchive.wustl.edu (128.252.135.4) via anonymous ftp in the pub directory as the gcc-i86ms.pat.Z file. david@wubios.wustl.edu ^ Mr. David J. I am not sure that my prior response to the question made it to the digest, so I will respond again. We encountered the same problem using 386MAX with a SCSI controller. We engaged in a lengthy discussion with the authors of the Western Digital SCSI software (I believe Columbia software of Florida) and the authors of 386MAX. Both pointed the finger at the other. It seems that a practice with SCSI ROM software is to occupy a tiny bit of memory just at the tip top of DOS. When QEMM or 386MAX encounters the presence of this, it shuts off the backfill feature since it knows that DOS memory would no longer be continguous. The only solution was suggestion by Columbia software and this was to remove one of the 2 ROMs from the SCSI controller -- the one that occupied that memory location. The penalty was that one would have to use software to replace that code and that would require booting from the floppy drive each time. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Dec 1990 22:02 MST From: "Frank J. Wancho" <WANCHO@WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL> Subject: SIMTEL20 disk space Due to a scheduling problem for the construction of the required room expansion to house the recently procured disk drives, there will be an unexpected three-to-four-month delay in the installation of the drives. This delay prompted some drastic action to make more long overdue disk space available to the ever-growing collections on SIMTEL20 after more than two years of managing saturated capacity. After consultation with our advisors, the PC/Blue collection was taken offline, to be restored when the new drives are online, together with nearly 100 new volumes currently waiting for disk space to become available. This decision was based on the fact that the existing MSDOS and MSDOS2 collections represent a majority of the same files contained in the PC/Blue collection and are generally newer versions (without the overhead of keeping older versions, due to the release scheme used by the PC/Blue Librarian). Because of the disproportionate amount of space freed up by removing the PC/Blue collection from PD1: (about half the capacity of PD1:), several collections were moved from PD2: and PD3: to PD1:, and from PD3: to PD2:: PD2:<MSDOS2*> -> PD1: (the subdirs will be moved to PD1:<MSDOS> PD3:<HZ100> -> PD1: PD3:<MISC*> -> PD1: PD3:<CPMUG> -> PD2: PD3:<ZSYS*> -> PD2: Now, all MSDOS and related collections are on PD1: and all CP/M and related collections are together on PD2:. The Unix-C and Ada collections will compete for the remain space on PD2:, while the Macintosh collection will compete for space on PD3: with the system support and documentation files. Note: PD3: also contains a mirror of the corresponding collections from NIC.DDN.MIL, namely all RFCs in RFC:, most of the NETINFO: files, all DDN-NEWS: files. We hope this temporary inconvenience will be offset by the value and availability of many new current releases we have been unable to provide until now. --Frank ------------------------------ Date: Thu Nov 29 12:11:55 GMT 1990 From: Mike O'Carroll <mike@elec-eng.leeds.ac.uk> Subject: UUCP for IBM & Sun > Hi folks. It's sending packets which are incorrect sizes, causing confusion in checksums, and then suddenly the PC mistakes a packet for a CLOSE, and that's that. I'm replacing the system uucico, since UUPC seems to be okay (Drew!). Gottier" <bg0v+@andrew.cmu.edu> Subject: Turbo C stack seg My program is currently overflowing the stack. I can't figure out how to increase the stack size. The description of the global variable _stklen in the reference manual says that the default is 4K. This is what my program is using. I am compiling using the huge memory model so the text indicates that the stack has its own segment. However, by default only 4K of that is used (ie. sp register starts at 0x1000). The text (for _stklen again) indicates that you can change the stack size. You don't just change this variable though. Apparently it is readonly and just indicates the compiled stack size. Setting the variable has no affect on the stack size. So how does one change the stack size? By the way, I am using Turbo C ver 2.0.
