Subject: Scheme for IBM PC compatibles?

In comp.sys.ibm.pc.digest you write:
>I'm looking for a PC version of Scheme (a LISP-like language).

Implementation: PC Scheme
Developed by: Texas Instruments Computer Science Lab
Supported by: Texas Instruments Digital Systems Group
Hardware: TI Professional and TI Business-Pro Computers,
IBM PC, PC/XT, PC/AT and IBM compatibles
Operating Systems: MS(tm)-DOS 2.1 (PC-DOS) or better (at least 320K, dual
                        floppy)
Price/Availability: List price - $95
Implementation: Incrementally compiled to byte-codes
Intended Use: Education, research, and support of AI software on PCs

PC Scheme is an implementation of Scheme for the TI Professional
Computer and IBM(r) Personal Computer families. The product consists
of an optimizing compiler, a byte-code interpreter, extensive run time
support, an interactive, display-oriented editor, a language reference
manual, and a user's guide. The system was developed on the TI
Professional Computer in Scheme itself, with critical run time routines
coded in C and assembly language for increased performance.

PC Scheme provides all the essential and most of the optional features
of the Revised Revised Report on Scheme. It fully supports the dialect
used in the book "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" by
Abelson and Sussman as well as many extensions developed at Indiana
University, MIT, and TI. These include first-class engines and
environments and an experimental, object-oriented programming system
with dynamic multiple inheritance called SCOOPS. Data type support
includes symbols, lists, vectors, strings, fixnums, bignums, flonums
(64 bit IEEE floating point), characters, closures, continuations,
environments, and I/O ports.

Evaluation is based on incremental compilation to byte-coded "virtual
machine" code which is emulated using threaded code techniques.
Informal benchmarks, including some of the Gabriel set, show PC Scheme
programs to be about 3-10 times faster than interpreted IQLISP(tm) and
2-4 times faster than interpreted Golden Common LISP(tm).

To order, write to Texas Instruments, 12501 Research Blvd., MS 2151,
Austin, TX 78759 and ask for TI Part number #2537900-0001. You may
also order by telephone using MasterCard or VISA by calling
1-(800)-TI-PARTS.

Questions or comments on the product may be directed to the address
given above. We also welcome less formal technical questions and
comments, which may be directed via CSNET to Oxley@TI-CSL.

Subject: Hard drive gone bad?

I have a Miniscribe 32mb hard drive on my XT clone. In recent months I
have come up with an interesting problem. On certain days when I start
up my system, it takes about 10-15 minutes to boot up! The system will
check the floppies and then begin to attempt to boot off the hard
drive. The light will flicker for a long time and then eventually, it
will 'catch' and boot up the system. Many times I have to CTRL-ALT-DEL
a couple of times before it will 'catch'. Then once in a while, the
system will respond with NON-SYSTEM DISK, referring to the hard drive.
Once it's booted, I have no trouble with the drive, all the files are
there and functional.

I have tried checking the drive with MACE, Nortons 4.0&5.0, and the
newest version of PCTools. None of these find anything wrong with the
disk. I have also scanned with the newest SCANV and have found no
viruses.

Any suggestions as to what I should check next?

Thank you.

Subject: How to undo RECOVER ?

I just found that by using the DOS utility RECOVER, one can
lost the harddisk.

It happened as follows. One night, my harddisk with partitions
"c:" and "d:" became inoperative (can't boot from it). I found that
the root directory of "C:" was flooded with 512 FILE0???.REC files.
CHKDSK C: reported that there were 1024 lost-chains.

I suspected that some one had done "RECOVER C:" since the files
resembles the output from RECOVER. I tested "RECOVER D:" and the same
result was found.

1, Could somebody explain what the command RECOVER does? (The DOS
manuals say that it recover files with bad sectors. But, why / how it
can destory the good ones?)

2, Is there any method to UNDO the RECOVER ?

Regards,

Subject: QUERY ABOUT TCP/IP WITH 3COM+ CARDS

We have a RS6000, several PS/2S as well as various other workstations
tied into an ETHERNET-work that is based on our VAX-cluster here at
NIEHS. I would welcome any suggestions as to a cost effective (or even
just effective) way to allow the PS/2s to submit remote jobs, transfer
files, etc to the RS6000. Are there public domain TCP/IP utilities out
there that might do the trick? All we have provided here is PCSA which
assumes DECNET capabilities. As always any & all suggestions are
welcome.

Subject: Info sought on PC Vault

Hi,
        I've sent a similar message to the IBMPC-list but I haven't
seen it posted yet and I'm hoping you'll be able to help me. I'm
looking for any info on a shareware package called PC Vault. It's a
security package for the IBM that I picked up about a year ago from
somewhere.

I work at a bank which happens to be evaluating it at this
point (I gave them a copy). It appears to working fine with no
problems, but they want some type of review from people who have used
it. So, if anybody out there has heard of PC Vault and/or has had any
experience with it, please let me know. IF there is interest, I'll
summarize for the list. Also, please respond directly to me since I'm
not a member of the list (small accounts here prevent it...).

        Thank you in advance,

Subject: Mouse emulation of game port?

I am aware of a couple of programs on Simtel to do mouse emulation of
arrow keys. Is it possible that someone has a program which simulates
the game port (joystick) using a mouse? I can't find one in the index.
Most newer PCs dont have game ports, and a lot of game software exists
which uses them. My kids thank you in advance ;-)

Subject: Turbo Pascal under Windows

Can anyone tell me how best to configure Turbo Pascal to run under
Windows 3.0? Prior to running Windows, I was able to load the contents
of the editor into extended memory, hence freeing up precious memory
for compiling. I cannot seem to duplicate this memory configuration
under windows. PS: I'm running Turbo 5.5, and don't yet have access
to the extended memory compilation available with the Professional
package that's available with 6.0.

We use an Ethernet-TCP/IP network connecting Unix machines. We would

are *very* interested in getting advises or comments from people who
have an operational experience with X-windows implementations for
MS-DOS PCs (80386 machines with > 4Mb RAM and VGA cards).

FRASRC15.ZIP C and ASM source for FRACTINT 15.0

Fractint version 15.0 is a freeware fractal generating program for the

greatly reduced memory requirements due to the use of overlays. New
