Subject: Hard Disk drives for PS/2 model 50 (V91 #13)

From: Paul Hosken <RMCB@DLRVM>

> I'd like to upgrade an IBM PS/2 model 50 (the original model) from the
> current 20 meg hard drive to a 60 or 80 meg. (A 40 would even be
> better than the 20 meg). Is that possible? Are there any "hardcard"
> type disk drives that would work? And, what about the model 50z? Any
> information would be appreciated!

In reply to this letter the editor suggested to look at Info-IBMPC
Digest V90 #192 for a summary of hard disk upgrading. This is all very
well but that article refered to the Model 80 only, and there is a
world of difference between the Models 80 & 50 (50z)!

I also have a Model 50 and have problems upgrading the hard disk. I am
desperately looking for a solution, and so can only echo the above plea
in the hope that someone answers it. The same question has been asked
repeatedly over the last year, but as yet I haven't seen any answers
published. Maybe some of the people who asked the questions have had
replies - if so, then please share them with us!

[I can only echo this readers concerns. If you readers get responses
to a query, please share the responses with the rest of the readership.
If you don't want to take the time to summarize the responses, forward
them to the Digest. There are many other readers out there that might
be able to use the same information. gph]

Subject: SGML

There is no such piece of software as SGML. SGML is a standard for
markup (ISO 8879) and is documented in "SGML---the user's guide to ISO
8879" by Joan M Smith and Robert Stutely (Ellis Horwood, Chichester,
UK, 1988) ISBN 0-7458-0221-4

There is an SGML-to-TeX converter called DAPHNE, from the DFN (Deutsche
Forschungsnetz) in Berlin. Contact Gerti Foest (foest@zpl.dfn.dbp.de)
for details.

Subject: TSR for Batch Files

In Info-IBMPC Digest V91 #14, Trevor Cradduck was searching for a TSR
that would "wake-up" at preset times to run a batch file.

I noticed the following file at DOC.CSO.UIUC.EDU but haven't tried it:

pc+mac/pc/exec-pc/timerun3.zip "v3.0-tsr to execute dos cmds at a specified
                                time"

Subject: adding a SCSI drive to a 386 system

Does anyone have experience in installing a SCSI hard drive in a 386
system. I currently have a 72meg and a 20meg MFM drive installed in a
386-25. They are attached via an Adaptec hard/floppy controller. The
SCSI host that I got is a TMC-840 with a Phoenix/Fujitsu bios. The
drive I am trying to add is a Fujitsu M2246SA 171meg. Currently, I get
a "No Fujitsu drive attached" error message. The jumper settings are
correct according to the factory.

QUESTIONS: Anyone know if it is possible to have two MFM and one SCSI
drive in operation at the same time? If not, should I remove one or
both of the MFM drives. What do I enter into CMOS setup?

                        Thanks,
                                Stephen Schmidt

Subject: Cartesian to Polar routine

Hello all,
       I need a routine and/or algorithm to convert a two-dimensional
matrix of data stored using cartesian coordinates (that is, one
dimension corresponds to X, and the other to Y), into a two-dimensional
matrix where the previous data are stored using polar coordinates (one
dimension will now correspond to radius from the matrix center, and the
other to the angle).

Please note I am not trying to convert cartesian coordinates
into polar coordinates (an obvious task) but to transfer data taken
using cartesian coordinates into a matrix with polar coordinates.

I have already coded a simple routine to do this job, but I find
it a too naive and inneficient. Any better piece of code in C, Pascal
or Fortran will be appreciated. Algorithm descriptions are also
welcome.

I wish to thank all those that helped me to find a contour
algorithm. Many many thanks.

Subject: Memory usage of Device drivers in Config.sys

DOS enthusiasts:

I am looking for a (shareware/public domain) utility that can list the
names of the device drivers loaded from CONFIG.SYS and report the
amount of memory occupied by each of the device drivers.

If you are familiar with the utility known as MAPMEM that lists the
names and memory occupied by TSRs, you will know what I mean. MAPMEM
unfortunately considers CONFIG.SYS to be one single TSR and does not
show the partitions occupied by the separate device drivers within it.

If you are familiar with more than one such utility, could you also
highlight the major differences between them, please? Any pointers
reagrding their location (SIMTEL, anonymous FTP sites) would be much
appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

[The MEM program supplied with DOS 4 will do this for you. Use the
command line entry MEM /DEBUG to get the memory allocation for device
drivers and TSRs currently in the system. Unfortunately, this program
is not PD or shareware. gph]

LOGOPAT1.ZIP Patch IBM LOGO for EGA/VGA/MCGA/386, w/TP src

LOGOPAT1 is an updated version for the bug fix for IBM LOGO for EGA,
VGA and 386. The program now is written for TURBO 5.5 (source
included) and the original message from Compuserve describing the bug
fix is included.
