I bought my 386SX from them a year ago, and am very satisfied with the
machine and their support so far. It is definitely one of the more
competitive companies in the PC mail order business right now, and I
would recommend their computers to you.

On a 286, QRAM cannot convert the extended memory to expanded (which is
what it needs). So if you want to utilize high memory on a 286, you
need an expanded memory card like the NEAT (Chips & Technologies).
There is a program called Netroom (I believe) that purports to be able
to load TSRs high on a 286, but I don't know if it requires expanded.
All memory managers I've seen require hardware expanded memory.

Subject: Can't CHKDSK a network disk???

Greetings,

We have a PC/XT (true Blue) that has never been networked. It has had a
Phillips 110 CD-ROM drive attached. There is no CONFIG.SYS or
AUTOEXEC.BAT files on the hard drive. DOS 3.2. Attempts to run CHKDSK
on this drive return the message "Can't CHKDSK a network drive". How
can I correct this? Several months ago CHKDSK worked normally on this
drive.

Thanks in advance, please respond directly to me, and I will post a summary.

Subject: digital/analog I/O

Can anyone recommend or suggest a I/O board for PC/XT-level (or above)
systems that can convert analog input into digital, in the 0 to +/-10V
range? Just from reviewing some ads I see boards from Real Time
Devices, Inc. and B&C Microsystems for $300-900, but I have no idea
what I should be looking for in such boards (other than to work on an
8088 machine and have it handle +/-10V signals). Any suggestions,
thoughts, or shared experiences would be most appreciated. Thanks in
advance...

Subject: PCX FILE FORMAT

Anyway on with the question...

I am working on a windows program to load in a PCX file (why windows
uses PCX instead of GIF format I'll never know), but I need to find out
how the data is stored in a PCX file and have been having
lots-o-problems finding a reference.

If someone could point me in the right direction (or send me the
complete file format) I'd appreciate it.

Subject: printing extended ascii

I have a Panasonic kxp1624 dot matrix printer. How can I print extended
ascii characters (like lines and other symbols) to it without using a
word processor? (Like COPY file PRN where the file contains extended
ascii lines, etc.) Or even using a word processor?

The COPY FILE PRN didn't work. For the lines I got just regular letters
substituted (Like D for a horizontal line.)

Thanks.

Subject: WESTERN DIGITAL HD CONTROLLER

I have a W.D. controller in my possession (of course with no
docs.). I need to know what these jumpers are for and what size drive
this thing can handle.

    It's a WD1002S-WX2 8-bit controller with jumpers labeled W1, W2,
W3, W4, W5, W6, W7 & SW1. All of the "W" jumpers are 3 prongs except
for W3. SW1 is a set of 8 2-prongs labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 7, 6, 5.

It has a data (or is it control) connector of 34 pins labeled J1,
and 2 20 pin connectors labeled J2 & J3.

Thanx, Glenn.

Subject: BAB CRC error from the Hard Disk

Greetings,

I have an ITT Xtra 386/16 with 4MB of ram and 2 MFM 40MB Segate HD's.
Lately my computer has been having trouble reading the C & D partion of
the first Drive. I am using 3.3 DOS Partions on my drives. The other
day I got a Bad CRC Error while trying to run PC Tools Version 6. What
is causing this? Do I need a new Hard Drive or Controller???

Thank You,

Subject: 8.x release of Clarkson packet driver collection

Now available from SIMTEL20, thanks to Russ Nelson:

pd1:<msdos.ka9q-tcpip>
DRIVERS.ZIP Clarkson packet drivers wo/src for KA9Q TCP/IP
DRIVERSS.ZIP Clarkson packet drivers w/src for KA9Q TCP/IP

---Forwarded message:
From: Russ Nelson <nelson@sun.soe.clarkson.edu>
X-From: "aka NELSON@CLUTX.BITNET" <nelson@clutx.clarkson.edu>

The 8.x release of the Clarkson collection of packet drivers is
available.

The packet drivers are for MS-DOS, and serve to hide the difference
between network cards, and allow multiple protocol stacks to access the
same card. Most often people are interested in running Novell's
Netware and TCP/IP at the same time.

Summary of changes in the 8.x release:

New drivers: HP Ethertwist, 3Com EtherLink Plus, UB NIC/PS2, ARLAN
450, NCR ET-105, D-Link DE-600, Mitel Express, NE/2, DEPCA, BICC
Isolink (4110-2/3) (buggy). Bugs fixed: pktchk, 3c523, ibmtoken,
tiara, ne2000, ubnicpc. All class 1 drivers can also act as class 11
drivers.

HOW TO GET IT:

    The Clarkson packet driver collection

Availability: The Clarkson collection of packet drivers is available
by FTP, by archive-server, and by modem. They come in two flavors --
executables only (drivers.zip), and source+executables (driverss.zip).
All of the following instructions apply to both drivers.zip and
driverss.zip.

Mail: I distribute the packet drivers on two 360K 5.25" disks, or a
720K 3.5" disk. I charge a fee for the service of copying and mailing
these disks. You can send me a check for $20, or you can send me a
purchase order and I will bill you for $22. NY residents add 7% sales
tax, overseas orders add $3 for shipping. If you send a check, please
be sure it is in US dollars -- the bank charges me $15 to convert
checks drawn in foreign currencies.

Subject: BOOTCOMP.ZIP - Use BIOS-ints to compare bootsector with saved

I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:

pd1:<msdos.virus>
BOOTCOMP.ZIP Use BIOS-ints to compare bootsector with saved

This package uses the original BIOS interrupts to get the "current"
bootsector and partitiontable and compare it with a previously saved
copy. Since the original interrupts are used, no virus can mislead the
program.
