It isn't. Soundblaster boards ship without the MIDI chip(s) or
software. A friend who did get it found that you can only get the MIDI
add-on with the watered down version of Voyetra's Sequencer Plus
(SPJr.) It apparently only receives or sends, but not both at the same
time. This has been the cause of some grumbling on
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware, if you receive that group. The next
Soundblaster is rumored to fix this and offer better sampling. Time
will tell. When I last spoke to someone at Creative Labs (and we
understood what each other was saying) they hinted at mid-March for the
release of something new. -- Bob

Subject: Re: 4DOS (V91 #43)
In reply to the message from David de leew: I use 4DOS XMS swapping,
and it's 70K. Anyway, even when using DV (39K), all the other programs
I use LOW take about 2.3K, and I'm left with 552K to use, which is more
than enough. Of course, if I would use less prgrams HIGH or use the
graphics memory I could gain more space for DV and increase the free
ram.
The solution is therefore:
1) To load less programs in high memory if you are using DV.
2) To use 4dos XMS swapping (uses only 0.6K of low memory!)
3) Convert some VGA graphics by QEMM, to allow more program to sit HIGH.

Subject: kermit file transfers
Finally got an answer that works. As per Terry Kennedy, in order to
properly transfer a binary file from the VAX to the PC using kermit
(version 3.3.126 on the VAX and 3.01 on the PC), SET FILE TYPE BLOCK on
the VAX kermit. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

Or could it be because that track wasn't formatted? Perhaps another
inturupt/BIOS call could extend that format.
You might want to look at some of the programs on WUARCHIVE.WUSTL.EDU
for some more information. I've seen several that claim that they
format a disk with more space. Maybe some of them include source on
how this is done.

Subject: hard drive and controller questions
i have an olivetti m28 (AT). i am in the midst of
1) running out of space on the hard-drive
2) looking for a new hard-drive
3) there is no #3
4) trying to work on the cheap, using my existing controller on the
new drive.
i have not purchased a new drive yet. basically, i am told the the
hard/floppy controller card i have on board now is an "st-506", or
emulates this operating configuration (if there is such a beast).
could somebody either tell me what sorts of hard-drives will operate
with this controller, or tell me how to start looking for myself?
i am not overly concerned with the latest whiz-bang in the way of
speed, simply in getting more hard-drive space (ca. 40-80 meg) for as
little money as possible.
thank-you in advance for your assistance.

Just a few quick questions on the HP Laserjet III:
Is there a "heavy duty" version of this printer (i.e. with a high
duty cycle and a better than 8ppm engine)?
Has anyone had any problems with Postscript compatibility (using
either HP's or a 3rd party cartridge)?
Thanks in advance...

Does anyone know of a way of getting MS-Kermit 3.01 to do file
transfers in the background without running it from a multitasking

VMIX multitasker but it was not reliable.

I have a Xerox 4020 printer with a serial interface and need a driver

of its color and hi resolution.
If anyone can help with either or both of these I would be very
appreciative

Subject: Software Quality Assurance Info Request
About 2 years ago we built a XPS, which customizes IEEE-Std 828-1983
and IEEE-Std 730-1984 to the needs of a specific project. The user is
asked for several parameters (project size, hardware platform, tools to
be used, names of team members, ...) and the system produces a Software
Quality Assurance Plan according to the IEEE-Standards. We didn't
continue working on this system, because the student, who did most of
the work, left our company. But I am still interested in tools that
have similar objectives and I would like to know more about Your
system.
