DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO SEMINAR ACTIVITIES HISTORY OF COMPUTING SEMINAR -Monday, October 2, 1989 Professor Brian Randell, Computing Laboratory, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K. will speak on ``Code-breaking Computers in Britain in World War II.'' TIME: 2:30 p.m. ROOM: DC 1302 ABSTRACT An account will be given of (i) two World War II German cipher machines, namely the now-famous Enigma and the less well-known Lorenz SZ40/42 (referred to by the Allies as the "Fish" machine), and (ii) of the code-breaking machines - which included the Colossus, arguably the world's first electronic digital computer - that were developed in great secrecy in Britain for use against the Enigma and Fish machines.
