>Any ideas?

Here is a printer driver that can do 360x180 dpi on Epson-compatible
24-pin dot-matrix printers.

I've used (with great success) a product called Graf/Driver Plus from
Fleming Software, Oakton, VA (703)591-6451. The package consists of BGI
graphic printer drivers for Turbo C and Turbo Pascal. The list price is
$299 for resale license (no royalties), and $149 for the Personal
license. Same software.

**************************** DISCLAIMER ****************************
* NO AFFILIATION WITH FLEMING SOFTWARE !!! *
**************************** DISCLAIMER ****************************

By including the drivers with your program, you can use the usual
graphics commands in Turbo C or Turbo Pascal, except instead of going
to the screen, the image goes to the printer using the resolution of
the PRINTER. For an Epson 9-pin printer, a full page hi-res (240x216
dpi) would consist of 1792x2160 pixels... more than a VGA screen. This
particular image would use 21K of memory for printer "commands", not
pixel data. It would also take about 20 minutes for the printer to
print it! So much for low-cost/speed printers. The printer driver is
completely independent of the video card you are using.

Printers supported include most 9- and 24-pin dot matrix, HP LaserJet
and compatibles, HP PaintJet, PostScript printers, and HP plotters
(7470, 7475, 7550, 7585). Each printer can have several modes such as
half-page, full-page, landscape, and low/med/hi resolution. The drivers
are installed with the installuserdriver function.

I must warn you that this is not intended to do "printscreens". Once
you do a "binitgraph" (supplied in the library), your video graphics
screen is not used or seen until the program calls the "bclosegraph"
function. If you want the user to see the image on the screen first,
your program will have to draw the graphics twice: once with the video
graphics card driver and once with the printer driver. I just prompted
the user for an output device, screen or printer? Then just initialize
the proper driver. At the end of the graphics code, the proper
'closegraph' must also be used.

Another little quirk is that the CPU is tied up until the printer is
done printing, or you can abort by pressing <esc>. Even a print spooler
or buffer cannot hold all of the graphic data that goes to a dot-matrix
printer. I have a spooler/buffer with 512K and it still takes several
minutes before the program can continue.

I'll second your hunch that it is not DV's fault. I do many complex
things at once in DV/386 routinely (compiling while downloading while
printing while doing my accounts while formatting floppies while...)
and I *never* get system hangs unless I've been very bad indeed, e.g.
if I've given two programs simultaneous access to the same COM port, or
something similar.

Has anyone heard anything about the new 2.8 meg 3.5" drives? I
thought about getting one, but I notice that only one company makes
them.... Any thoughts? Is it hard to get disks? Do I need a special
controller? I have an original IBM AT 286 (Yes, a whopping 6MHz), with
updated Phoenix Bios. I also don't know whether or not I'll have a
BIOS problem.

I've had a hard time asking computer stores, because it's so new,
noone seems to know anything about it. Thanks in advance for any helP!

the college is having a war about which network card to use. some

most of the people are leaning towards the Arcnet card, it's slower
but, it's five times less in price to install.

i need some pro's and con's about both cards.

I might be addressing this to the wrong person, but here goes. To
avoid day-long noise from a HardCard in an XT (Western Digital 32M) I
have been trying to find a utility to actually switch off the motor of
the fairly noisy drive, after a specified number of minutes of non-use.
Autoparking of the head does something else. Is there auch a utility?

Just ignore this if you are plagued by too many questions like this,
otherwise thanks for any comments (e.g. "technically impossible") that

Subject: TC: Reading from Modem

Hi there,

Can someone out there please let me know if there is a way to insure
that all characters are read from the communication ports, other than
rewriting INT 14H? I'm using bioscom() to set up the port, read, and
write characters. Things work...sort of. I simply have a continuous
loop that checks for a character from the com port, displays it if
there is one, checks for a keypressed, sends it if there is one, etc.
Things work fine at 300baud. But at 1200baud, I usually miss the first
few characters of a stream from the com port. Isn't there a buffer on
the com port? Should I be handling the interrupt myself and buffer it?

Any suggestions, code (TC as well as TASM), or pointers to more help
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot,

David Markley (dm3e+@andrew.cmu.edu)

Subject: OBRONM11.ZIP - Oberon-M compiler v1.1, w/sources and docs

I have uploaded new version of my Oberon-M package to SIMTEL20:

pd1:<msdos.pgmutl>
OBRONM11.ZIP Oberon-M compiler v1.1, w/sources and docs

Oberon is the 2nd generation programming language past Pascal (and is
the next step past Modula-2). It cleans up most of the difficulties of
Modula, while giving a clean, simple way to do just about anything in a
type-safe way. The definition comes from Niklaus Wirth, at ETH in
Zurich (who of course defined its predecessors).

My MSDOS compiler has been in use for 18 months, and has seen no bugs
for over a year. It contains the language revisions made by Professor
Wirth. Note that this compiler (and its associated library modules)
are exclusively for MSDOS: standard object files are generated and
theoretically may be linked with other non-Oberon files.

Programs written using this package are source compatible with the
so-called Oberon System used at ETH Zurich.

From: "Drew Derbyshire - UUPC/Extended Help Desk" <help@kendra.kew.com>
Subject: UUPC/extended version 1, release 10a now available

UUPC/extended 1.10a is now available via anonymous FTP from SIMTEL20:

pd1:<msdos.uucp>
UUPC10A.INF UUPC/extended v1.10a changes summary (04/91)
UUPC10AS.ZIP    MSDOS uucp, TC++/MSC6.0 src (04/91), part 1of4
UUPC10AU.ZIP MSDOS uucp, EXE & doc files (04/91), part 2of4
UUPC10AW.ZIP MSDOS uucp, raw doc files (04/91), part 3of4
UUPC10A2.ZIP MSDOS uucp, EXE for OS/2 (04/91), part 4of4

This is a small free package for MS-DOS and OS/2 which exchanges mail
with remote systems using the UUCP "g" procotol, and includes a
UNIX-like mail user interface. It does NOT include news reading
support.

Major changes for this release include:

        Generic modem support

Addition of native OS/2 communications support. A new file has
been added to the UUPC/extended archives, UUPC10A2.ZIP, with the OS/2
executables.

A new UUCP command to directly copy files between between two
systems without using the MAIL interface.

The ability to gateway mail from UUPC/extended to an external
program, such the mail delivery program for LAN.

UUPOLL now supports automatically terminating polling after a
user specified interval.

Improved routing via domains, including wildcard routing.

The NOVRSTRK program will now correctly format the online
version of the documentation from the printed version.

Looping mail is now detected after a user specified number of
transfers between systems.

And, of course, the usual bug fixes.

Additional numerous changes are documented in the file CHANGES.PRN
included in the user archive.

Note: Special thanks go to Harry Broomhall, Cliff Stanford, and Harald
Boegeholz for providing me with many of the various enhancements
related to UUCP and UUIO in this release.

UUPC/extended is distributed in several .ZIP format archives, each with
a name of the format of UUPCxxx#.ZIP, where 'xxx' are the last three
digits of the release number, and '#' is a character denoting which
archive it is.

UUPCxxxU is the User archive, and includes the MS-DOS versions of
the executable files, formatted documents, and sample files. This is
the only archive you need if you only to run the unmodified programs on
MS-DOS.

UUPCxxx2 is the OS/2 archive, and includes the OS/2 versions of the
executable files. It does NOT include the formatted documents or
sample files.

UUPCxxxS is the source archive, and includes the source files,
makefiles, and the samples.

UUPCxxxW is the Windows archive, which includes the unformatted
documents, most of which are written in Microsoft Word for Windows.

For this release, 'xxx' (the release number) is "10A".

If you are unable to access the files by FTP and do not have the
previous release's documentation on other sources for UUPC/extended,
please send mail to help@kendra.kew.com for a list of places it can
retrieved from mail archive server or via direct downloading.

Subject: Version 77 of McAfee anti-virals for MS-DOS

Now available via anonymous ftp from SIMTEL20 [192.88.110.20]:

pd1:<msdos.trojan-pro>
CLEAN77.ZIP Universal virus disinfector, heals/removes
NETSCN77.ZIP Network compatible - scan for 243 viruses, v77
SCANV77.ZIP VirusScan, scans disk files for 243 viruses
VCOPY77.ZIP Copy utility checks for viruses as it copies
VSHLD77.ZIP Resident virus infection prevention program

VIRUSCAN, NETSCAN, VSHIELD, and VCOPY

Version 77 of these programs adds four new viruses: The Empire
virus is a floppy disk boot sector and hard disk partition table
infecting virus. It is based on the Stoned virus and was first
reported in Alberta, Canada. The Star Dot virus was received from
Europe. The New Sunday virus is a variant of the Sunday virus. The
Casino virus has also been added. For a listing of complete listing of
viruses, refer to the VIRLIST.TXT file.

Additionally, detection of three virus variants have been added:
The Collor variant of the Stoned virus, which contains the messages
"Collor, um tiro basta!" and "Call John McAFee?" was reported in Sao
Leopoldo, Brazil by Mr. Raul F. Weber. Another variant of the Stoned,
containing a message about Saddam Hussein has been added. The Rabid
variant of the Dark Avenger virus has also been added.

The scanning routine for Version 77 has also been sped up. It is
now 5% faster than Version 76.

CLEAN-UP
Version 77 replaces Version 76 of CLEAN which had a bug in it that
prevented it from removing the viruses added in that release. The
viruses added in Version 76 were: the 555, 651, 3066, Air Cop, Beeper,
Black Monday, Den Zuk, Fellowship, Filler, Ghost (Boot Sector Portion)
Korea, Lazy, Lisbon, Mardi Brothers, Murphy, Print Screen-2, RPKS,
