I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:

pd1:<msdos.handicap>
ASAP10.ZIP Automatic screen access for voice synth. DEMO

This description is from the ASAP documentation.

Automatic Screen Access Program (ASAP), as its name indicates, gives
you speech access to applications programs automatically. While there
are other programs that provide speech access to applications software,
ASAP is the only package available that lets the computer do the work
for you. That means you don't have to be a genius or even a very
patient person to start using thousands of programs with speech.
Unlike other speech access software, ASAP lets you use the computer
like your sighted peers; you just start the program of interest without
having to configure your system for speech.

Once you start ASAP, it stays in the background constantly watching the
screen and notifying you about important changes that happen. You
don't have to learn a bunch of screen access commands; instead, you use
the application's commands, and ASAP observes the program's reactions
to determine what you want to hear. There are also additional keys
you can use to go back and review the screen for text that you might
need to hear again. These, as you'll see shortly, are accessed, for
the most part, with the numeric keypad. In addition, ASAP has a
"Control Panel" where you alter the way ASAP behaves.

DVPTAME controls programs which incessantly poll the keyboard. It
should handle what TAME does with less memory requirements.

I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:

pd1:<msdos.fortran>
F2C-SRC.ZIP Source for f2c, Fortran 77-to-C converter
F2C-EXE.ZIP Binaries & Libs for f2c Fortran to C converter

This is AT&T's f2c project--A portable fortran 77 to C converter that
is the closest thing I know of to free fortran on an MSDOS machine.
The sources were FTP's from research.att.com, and compiled with
virtually no changes with MSC 5.1. Both small and large model
libraries are included with the executable. Because of DOS's small
memory size, very large programs may run out of space during the
conversion, but I found that all but the largest fortran programs will
convert properly. The C produced is very portable K&R C, with options
to produce ANSI C or C++.

I hope they can be useful.

Subject: Helppc21 -- Stupendous PC reference work!
Comment: Forwarded by Keith Petersen

I heartily recommend that everyone who programs on a PC look at
helppc21. It's an online reference work for everything associated with
a PC -- opcodes (through the '486), interrupts (dos, bios, mouse),
ASCII charts, keycode charts, hardware descriptions (connectors, chips,
bus lines), C functions, etc.

It works from the command line, or as a TSR. Written by David Jurgens,
it's a $25 piece of shareware. You'd spend at *least* that on just one
book that wouldn't have one tenth the information. This is the first
piece of shareware that I've ever registered -- the first one that I've
felt was worth it.

I found it on simtel20:

pd1:<msdos.info>
HELPPC21.ZIP Extensive PC Programmer's information database

I've also uploaded it to grape.ecs.clarkson.edu, where you can get it
by modem. Grape is (315)268-6667, 12/2400 baud, 8N1, 24 hours. You
may need to generate a break to switch to the right baud rate. It's
stored on grape in:

grape.ecs.clarkson.edu:pub/msdos/prog/helppc21.zip

Same pathname for FTP and modem.

These routines contain 42 functions (each!) to manage multiple
microsecond timers, generate precision delays, and profile user
selected interrupts. I have used them in research requiring precise
response time measurements, but they could obviously be used in a
variety of applications, such as execution profiling and data
acquisition/process control applications. Unlike other routines I've
seen, which get around the usual 18.2 ticks per second limitation that
the real imposes by speeding up the clock, which can get you
millisecond resolution timers, there routines access the system timer
directly, which ticks once every 838 nanoseconds. Shareware, by Ryle
Design. If you register, you get source as well, and large memory
libraries for the two C versions.

Subject: READIT15.ZIP - Text file reader w/bookmark, for speech synth.
Summary: Reposted by Keith Petersen

I have uploaded to SIMTEL20:

<msdos.handicap>
READIT15.ZIP Text file reader w/bookmark, for speech synth.

This description is from the programs documentation.

ReadIt is an ASCII text file display (reading) program. It was written
by a blind computer programmer/user who uses a text-to-speech software
package to access computers. Our goal was to create a file reader that
was easy to use for both sighted people and persons using speech
software and synthesizers.

Some of ReadIt's features are listed below. Those that might be
particularly useful to persons using speech software are followed by an
S within parenthesis (S).

- Requires only 150k bytes of free memory.

- Allows you to read large files even if the entire file can not be
loaded into memory. Readit loads up as much as it can in available
memory and accesses the rest as needed.

- Will read up to approximately 460k bytes into memory to reduce disk
accesses and speed up searches.

- Lets you specify file to be read from the DOS command line or from
the file entry window.

- Provides a file pick list that enables you to move through your hard
drives directories and select a file to be read.

- Has an automatic "smart" line wrap feature which breaks long lines
so that all text is on the screen. There is no need to scroll the text
when reading a file containing very long lines. Lines are not broken
in the middle of words. (S)

- Lets you search file for specific text.

- Remembers up to five (5) text strings that you enter from the find
panel. You can scroll through this list to select a string to be
searched for.

- Remembers up to five (5) filenames and/or drive specifications
entered in the filename entry panel. You can scroll through these to
select a file to be read or a drive and or directory to display in the
pick list.

- Has a variable speed, continuous scroll mode for hands free reading
of a text file.

- Has switchable display modes (direct or bios). (S)

- Displays a status panel to let you know where you are and what
switches are set. The method for updating this panel can be set to
Bios (except for line numbers) or direct. (S)

- Enables you to execute DOS commands from the text display window (if
enough memory is free).

- Remembers up to five (5) DOS commands and lets you scroll back
through them to pick one to execute.

- Displays a 2-line help panel that shows some of the available
commands.

- Always displays error messages at the same place on the screen
accompanied by an error tone. No silent error boxes that might pop up
anywhere. (S)

- Has help panels that can be pulled down from anywhere in the program.
These help panels are full-screen width and always start at the top of
the screen. (S)

- Lets you set a "bookmark" in each file that you read. You can set a
bookmark, go somewhere else in the file, and then return to the
bookmark.

- Automatically saves a set bookmark when you leave a file and
automatically takes you to the bookmark the next time you enter that
file.
