PLEASE TAKE NOTE - The UUCP Mapping Project, in its next posting of the map files, intends to take advantage of some of the newest features found in the latest version of the pathalias program. The program itself will be posted to the comp.unix.sources newsgroup on Friday, October 9. Hopefully, it will be fully distributed throughout the network by Monday, Oct 12. Some new features we plan to use: o - Dead hosts and edges (-d) can be declared in the input stream We are hoping in the future to take advantage of this feature by creating a new file that will contain known dead hosts and links. When a catastrophe that is going to last for more than a few days occurs on a major mail site, we'll be able to cause the entire network to route around the host instead of watching lots of mail clog up in mail queues. o - Empty private lists (private{}) end scope declarations Previously, if a map entry contained a private declaration, the declaration wasn't closed out until EOF was seen. If all of the map files were merged into one file and then fed it to pathalias, the private declarations didn't end where expected. Now, each map file will end with an empty private declaration. o - Terminal Edges You'll now have the ability to instruct pathalias to not produce routes through a neighbor of yours. In this example, the link definition: rutgers amdahl<DEDICATED> <- note the angle brackets will define a dedicated link as before. However, pathalias will not generate any paths that will cause mail to pass from rutgers through amdahl to some other site. Along with the comp.unix.sources posting, I'm hoping to make this newest relase of pathalias available via anonymous FTP from several sites on the internet. If you're in a position to donate a small amount of diskspace towards this purpose, please get in touch with me .... -- -Mel Pleasant uucp: {ames, cbosgd, harvard, moss, mit-eddie, hao}!rutgers.edu!pleasant arpa: PLEASANT@RUTGERS.EDU
