I would like to start a list of the IMPORTANT problems in OS and Distributed OS research. I think it would be good for several reasons: first, it would stimulate discussion, second, it would refute the claims of some people who say that all the interesting OS problems have been solved (the life after UNIX question), and third I would hope that it would stimulate research in OS by giving people interesting problems to investigate. So, send me your favorite problem. I will collect them, edit them and post them. If we do a good job I would hope that we could get the list into one of the OS newsletters. My supervisor is Andrzej Goscinski and he has given me the following two questions to pass on :- 1. Algorithms for process migration in terms of When, Which, and Where and resource management systems. 2. Location of policies and mechanisms for resource management systems. We are currently working on the design of a Research Oriented Distributed Operating System (RODOS) and in doing so proposing solutions to the above. ---- Mr. Brendan Williams, Phone ISD: +61 62 688154 Fax: +61 62 470702 Dept.
