You should have a look at the CHORUS Kernel. 

It currently serves to support a Distributed Real-Time UNIX
environment (available commercially). 

It is also used in a number of European R&D Projects (Esprit) dealing
with distributed Object Oriented systems, as well as multi-processor 
and multi-computer (NUMA) architectures.
