[comp.os.research] recovery from RAIDs

douglis%sprite.Berkeley.EDU@ginger.Berkeley.EDU (Fred Douglis) (07/14/89)

If one of the disks in a RAID fails, some data will be lost. What
will the recovery procedure (from tapes ?) be under Sprite ?

Why would some data be lost? The point of a RAID is the "R" part:
redundancy. What's lost from one disk is recovered from the remaining
disks.

There are all sorts of issues relating to recovery of RAIDs (e.g., the
performance degradation from reading all the disks to get the data for
a failed one.) This stuff is still somewhat in the design stage. But
for a general overview of RAIDs and how Sprite plans to use them, see
the COMPCON '89 proceedings.
