This CFP is a repost due to Call for active participation: a failure in previous post. Sorry if You get it twice. Niels Christian Workshop on Garbage Collection in Object-Oriented Systems Sunday, October 21st, 1990 (in conjunction with the Joint ECOOP/OOPSLA'90 Conference) Ottawa, Canada. Inherent in most object-oriented systems is the basic notion that all objects exist forever; thus there is no notion of neither object destruction nor even of any kind of storage administration. In actuality, when an object no longer can be referenced, it is garbage collected by the run-time system. In the past years, a substantial amount of effort has gone into trying to make object garbage collection efficient. This workshop will examine the issues and work toward identifying the techinques used as well as the major problems being worked on. Part of the workshop is devoted to the issue of garbage collection in distributed object-oriented systems. The workshop will last one full day. The format will alternate between presentations (invited speakers and speakers chosen on the basis of their position papers) and discussions of the issues raised by the speakers. There will be short sections concerning specific topics, such as: - Performance of existing techniques (presentation of actual performance data) - Distributed garbage collection - Garbage collection for particular languages, such as Smalltalk. The workshop is open to researchers and practioners who have actual experience with garbage collection. Participation is by invitation and will be limited to approximately 30 people. Invitation is based on short position papers (2--5 pages). The deadline for position papers is August 1st, 1990. Position papers will be reviewed and invitation sent out by the end of August. For participation, please send to the workshop organizers (at the address given below): 1. Your name, e-mail address, surface mail address, fax and phone numbers, and your affiliation. 2. Either a general position paper (for a 20-30 min. presentation) or a shorter position paper (for a 10-15 min. presentation or no presentation) on garbage collection in object-oriented systems (in two copies). The workshop is organized by Eric Jul and Niels Christian Juul, Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
