[An original version of this submission appears to have been lost, so I'll try again] I'm looking for studies of operating system workloads. In particular, I need information about the size (in memory) and run-time (preferable in instructions) distributions of applications run under various operating systems. I could presumably do a crude version of this myself by just turning on accounting on a few systems for a day, but I suspect that, due to its clear relevance to operating system design, someone must have done this type of study already, and much more thoroughly.
