CALL FOR PARTICIPATION 1991 INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON OBJECT-ORIENTATION IN OPERATING SYSTEMS I-WOOOS '91 Palo Alto, California, USA, October 17-18, 1991 Sponsored by The IEEE Technical Committee on Operating Systems and Application Environments (TCOS) INTRODUCTION: There has been recently a great deal of activity applying the object-oriented approach in the area of operating systems. This workshop will consider the several ways that this can be envisaged. Many research groups worldwide have started to address this question independently. This workshop supplies a unique opportunity for them to meet and to share their experiences. I-WOOOS '91 is in fact the second edition of this workshop; the first took place in October 1990 in Ottawa (Canada) at the 1990 joint ECOOP/OOPSLA conference. SUBJECTS OF INTEREST: Relevant subjects of interest include, but are not limited to: + Operating system support for objects. + Structuring the operating system with objects. + Relations between user objects and OS objects. + Object-oriented languages and operating systems. + Object reliability and security. + Mechanisms for object persistence + Operating systems and garbage collection + Distributed object systems WORKSHOP STRUCTURE: Each attendee is requested to send a short (1 to 5 page) position paper. Depending on the number of submissions, and due to the limited time allotted for the workshop, the committee will group the paper into relevant categories and select a few representative submissions for presentation to set the tone for following discussions. In addition, a number of guest attendees, from outside the direct focus of the workshop, have been invited. They shall present fresh input, disseminating the needs of operating system users to operating system researchers. Topics for these discussions include: + Databases + Compilers + Programming Environments + Applications + OS Services + Reliability and Security + Multimedia + Past Experiences ATTENDEE INFORMATION: The official language for the conference will be English. Persons interested in this workshop are invited to send two copies of a short (1 to 5 pages) position paper, by 1 August 1991, to either the the workshop general chairman or the program committee chairman listed below. (Please, do *not* send submissions by e-mail.) WORKSHOP LOCATION: The workshop will be held at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in Palo Alto, California.
