The Concurrent Systems Project of Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto,
California, has openings to work on DataMesh -- a research project to
develop large, fast, highly-functional storage servers.

The DataMesh project is addressing the widening disparity between VLSI and
physical storage device performance, and the need for large amounts of I/O
traffic to support near-future workgroups. A DataMesh is a high-performance,
extensible, fault-tolerant parallel storage surface built from a set of smart
storage nodes and a fast, reliable interconnect. Each node has a single
storage device (disk, page-addressable RAM, optical jukebox, etc) and a 20
MIPS CPU with 8-32 MB of RAM. We are putting together the first hardware
prototypes this summer.

We are looking for individuals capable of acting as the nucleus for a small
research activity of their own within the DataMesh project. The rewards are
commensurate: you'll work as a member of a research team with a very
challenging goal.

A PhD in Computer Science is required, as is a publication record in the area
of systems research (although several outstanding publications in other areas
of CS could be a substitute).
