                              Warren Jackson
                             Director of UTCS

"CA*net - the new Canadian Network"

The talk will contain a few technological "nuggets", but will be
 of primary
interest in exposing the process of bringing a national facility to
the point of being funded. This presentation will describe CA*net
concept. The RFI/RFP process the NRC used to
select the successful bidder to design/implement and operate a national
backbone network to link regional networks across Canada will be
 presented. The
contributions of the participants, UTCS, IBM and INSINC, as well as the
management structure and ownership of the network will be explained.
The expected costs of the network will be detailed, as will the sources
of funds, namely NRC, the participants and the regional networks. The
specifications, characteristics, topology and nodal architecture
will be examined. The implementation schedule and operation as well as
the relationship of CA*net to other national and international networks
will be described. Finally, the benefits to U of T and Canadian
 researchers will be highlighted.
