		  	       Summary
Third SIAM Conference on Applied Linear Algebra
			    May 23-26, 1988
			   Madison, Wisconsin

Facts and Figures:

	Attendance: 340
	Invited papers: 7
	Minisymposium papers: 55
	Contributed papers: 164

As the above data indicates, the meeting was a great success from a
numerical point of view. The technical aspects of the conference were
just as impressive with many excellent talks and informal discussions
throughout the four days. The number of papers presented is believed
to be a record for SIAG/LA conferences. The Madison sky cooperated and
produced great weather for walks, jogging, refreshing lunch breaks,
etc. Thanks go to Richard Brualdi (Co-Chair), Hans Schneider (Co-Chair),
David Carlson, John Lewis, Bob Plemmons, and Charles Van Loan for
organizing the meeting.

On Wednesday morning the annual meeting of the SIAG/LA was held. A
summary of the topics discussed and information presented is given
below.

New Officers - New officers will be elected this fall with their
three-year term beginning on January 1, 1989. The current
officers form the Nomination Committee. Members wishing to
suggest nominees should contact one of the current officers
       immediately.

Future Program Activities - Sponsored activities in the near future
include David Young's 65th birthday celebration in Austin, Texas
(October 19-21, 1988), Sparse Matrix Symposium at the Salishan
Lodge near Portland, Oregon (May 22-24, 1989), and Householder
Symposium XI in Sweden (Summer, 1990). A conference on Markov
and stochastic matrices has been tentatively planned for late
1989 or early 1990, and a conference on signals, systems, and
control has been discussed for 1990. Three cities have been
volunteered to host our next Applied Linear Algebra Conference
in 1991: Minneapolis, Montreal, and San Diego. This will be one
of the first decisions made by our new officers.

Newsletter - Information appropriate for the SIAG Newsletter was
solicited and issue dates announced. Please provide Richard
Brualdi with items for the August issue of the newsletter by
the end of this July. Email may be sent to him at
       na.brualdi@na-net.stanford.edu at any time.

One of the major highlights of the conference came at the end of the
SIAG/LA annual meeting. The first SIAG/LA Linear Algebra Prize was
presented to Jim Demmel for his paper "On Condition Numbers and the
Distance to the Nearest Ill-Posed Problem," Numer. Math 51 (1987)
251-289. After the ceremony, Demmel gave a stirring half-hour
account of his work in the area of the prize paper.
