The digest is % therefore dedicated to responses and announcements from NAG. % % Please can I have some new year's pressies in the form of e-mail % messages for the digest? It would be nice to have some good % debate in the digest to start off the New Year. % % Tim % % p.s. Please note the new NAGUA telephone number at the end of % the article Today's Topics Replies from NAG Call for Papers April Workshop --------------------------- Date: Wed, 6 Dec 89 9:36 GMT Subject: Replies from NAG REPLIES FROM NAG ---------------- Reply to issue 23 re: G05CBF ------ Peter Visscher encountered a problem when using G05CBF. He calls G05CBF within a loop using a random integer as a seed and reports that the results give reduced variance. The problem may be caused by the different streams of random numbers started with each call to G05CBF not being independent. Randomness can only be expected within a stream of random numbers not between streams. Independent seeds do not guarantee independent streams of random numbers. The correlation between the streams of random numbers would lead to a reduced overall variance. The current NAG random number generator does not allow you to set up independent streams of random numbers in a safe and convenient way and it is something that we are currently examining. Geoff Morgan Replies to issue 24 ------------------- re: Online Information Supplement ----------------------------- Thank you for your comments about Mark 13 Online Information Supplement on the Cray X-MP running UNICOS 4.0. 1. Mark 13 News. We have noted your comment, and will be providing fuller information at Mark 14. 2. A00AAF. This will be included at Mark 14. 3. Unix version under Cray. The Unix version of the new HELP program will be standard Fortran 77 at Mark 14. Diana Grace re: New Library Routines -------------------- Thank you for your suggestion. There will, in fact, be a new routine at Mark 14 - E04UPF. This routine will minimise a sum of squares of non-linear functions subject to simple bounds on the variables, general linear constraints and non-linear constraints.
