                       Brussels, Belgium, 8-9 June, 1988

                             BACKGROUND AND THEMES

The use of information technology in business is an area of growing
importance because of its potential to change the ways in which
businesses operates by altering the outcomes of traditional operations,
by changing the ways in which firms take up market opportunities and,
indeed, by changing those opportunities. The use of IT ought therefore
to be considered as part of the strategic planning process of firms,
thereafter means must be found to implement the strategies.

The challenges posed are many, but can be grouped as follows.
Recognition of the importance of IT. The problems of the dialogue
between strategic planners, managers and technologists in terms of
the differences in language, methodology and outlook. Problems of
assessing technology and the justifications given for the selected
systems. Models and methodologies for generating business strategies
which incorporate IT. Assessments of the relative merits of different
possible strategies and the criteria for doing this.

The workshop aims to bring together people from a number of different
areas of business and of IT and giving a variety of perspectives
(accountancy, administration, consultancy, management, marketing,
planning, technology, etc). Contributions will include case studies,
field work and experiments together with analytical, historical and
methodological perspectives.
