- - INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND BUSINESS STRATEGY Workshop in Information Technology and Business Strategy Brussels, Belgium, 8-9 June, 1988 BACKGROUND AND THEMES The use of information technology in business is an area of growing importance because of its potential to change the ways in which businesses operates by altering the outcomes of traditional operations, by changing the ways in which firms take up market opportunities and, indeed, by changing those opportunities. The use of IT ought therefore to be considered as part of the strategic planning process of firms, thereafter means must be found to implement the strategies. The challenges posed are many, but can be grouped as follows. Recognition of the importance of IT. The problems of the dialogue between strategic planners, managers and technologists in terms of the differences in language, methodology and outlook. Problems of assessing technology and the justifications given for the selected systems. Models and methodologies for generating business strategies which incorporate IT. Assessments of the relative merits of different possible strategies and the criteria for doing this. The workshop aims to bring together people from a number of different areas of business and of IT and giving a variety of perspectives (accountancy, administration, consultancy, management, marketing, planning, technology, etc). Contributions will include case studies, field work and experiments together with analytical, historical and methodological perspectives.
