              macro-integration, tools and applications

                          September 17, 1987
                      Amsterdam, The Netherlands

AIM AND SCOPE

The ever-increasing demands of speed, area and performance in
advanced systems point to the need of VLSI (Very Large Scale Integra-
tion) and macro-integration. The availability of efficient manufactur-
ing and implementation techniques of VLSI based systems will have a
revolutionary impact on the electronic market place. To take full
advantage of new markets created for advanced systems, researchers as
well as system manufacturers must be up date on current and future
directions.

The First European Symposium on VLSI and ADVANCED SYSTEMS is
devoted to the progress in VLSI and Advanced Systems, including
computer-aided design, reliability, testing, application specific
integrated circuits (ASICs), digital signal processing architectures
and general purpose computer architectures.

The symposium, to be held September 17th, 1987 in Amsterdam, is
organized and hosted by the IRIS Foundation and the University of
Amsterdam. It's two objectives are:

o to spread the knowledge concerning the design and production of
     VLSI and advanced systems

o to act as a forum where contributors from universities and indus-
try meet to exchange information and share ideas.

In striving for a useful treatment of VLSI and ADVANCED SSTEMS,
it is crucial to have a fundamental understanding of complex
integrated circuits as well as the constraints imposed by systems. The
future trend of advanced systems research is highly cross-
disciplinary, involving close interaction between algorithms, archi-
tectures and technology. In line with this new trend, several
selected invited speakers will address the current status of VLSI
technology, from an academic as well as an industrial perspective.
