                   Call for Papers VDM'88 Symposium
                         VDM - the Way Ahead

         Sponsored by the Commission of the European Communities
                         11-16 September 1988

The second VDM Symposium will be held at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.
The symposium is organised by VDM-Europe, which is sponsored by the
Commission of the European Communities, to promote the interests of users
and developers of VDM by disseminating recent knowledge and experience.
Proceedings of the symposium will be published.

Papers are invited in the following, not necessarily exclusive, areas:

-  'Research Topics' including semantics of VDM, further developments of the
   language and method, proof theory for VDM, etc.

-  'Life Cycle Role' of VDM and other formal methods in the certification 
   and reliability of software; software engineering issues.

-  'Case Studies': examples demonstrating particular technical usage of VDM,
   means of training, demonstrations of reliability increase, productivity,
   cost savings, etc.

-  'Project Reports': brief reports on recent project experiences using VDM.

-  'Standardisation Issues': technical proposals for standards, e.g. language
   definition, semantics, etc., technical progress and output from standard-
   isation initiatives.

-  'Impact of other Formal Methods', e.g. technical comparisons with VDM, 
   combining other formal methods or languages with VDM.

-  'Survey Papers' on the research topics and other areas may also be accep-
   ted.

Papers should not exceed 15,000 words in length.  Three copies of complete
papers should be sent by 31 January 1988 to Mr. M. W. Rogers of the CEC
(address below).  Notification by 1 May 1988, amended versions by 30 June 
1988.  For project reports, to enable them to be up to date, abstracts only 
are required by 31 January 1988, with final versions by 30 June 1988.  In the
case of joint authors please nominate one author as recipient of all corre-
spondence, etc.

The symposium will include tutorial session, tools exhibition, poster dis-
plays, and impromptu discussion sessions.
