			    CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

			    ACM SIGPLAN AND SIGOPS
		WORKSHOP ON PARALLEL AND DISTRIBUTED DEBUGGING
				May 5-6, 1988
			   University of Wisconsin
			   Madison, Wisconsin 53706

	 ACM SIGPLAN and SIGOPS, in cooperation with the University of
    Wisconsin, are sponsoring a workshop on parallel and distributed
    debugging. The workshop will bring together system designers and
    implementors in a common forum to discuss program monitoring and
    debugging in parallel and distributed systems. To facilitate discus-
    sion, the workshop will consist of technical sessions, where partici-
    pants make short formal presentations of their current work, and panel
    discussions, where specific topics of general interest or controversy
    can be explored in detail. Topics of specific interest include (but
    are not limited to):

    o architecture, operating system, and protocol support for debug-
	 ging parallel or distributed systems;

    o    impact of programming language and semantics on debugging;

    o temporal issues - real-time constraints, performance monitoring,
	 event ordering;

    o methodological issues - interactive debugging, user interfaces,
	 execution tracing and animation;

    o theoretical issues - models of debugging and programming.

	 Attendance will be limited to approximately 50 active researchers
    in the field. To participate, please submit a 5 page (double spaced)
    extended abstract. Attendance at the workshop will be by invitation
    based on the submitted extended abstracts.

	 All participants will be expected to submit a complete paper to
    appear in the workshop proceedings. The proceedings will be distri-
    buted to all attendees at the workshop. We anticipate a special jour-
    nal issue devoted to the best papers from the workshop. A summary of
    the workshop will appear in SIGOPS Operating Systems Review and SIG-
    PLAN Notices.

    Send 8 copies of the extended abstracts to:
