- - - Arctic'88 An Advanced Course on Distributed Systems July 5th-14th, 1988, Tromsoe, Norway The course will present a state-of-the-art review and explanation of current research in distributed computing. The topics will include but are not limited to: o distributed operating system structures o machine architecture o communication architectures o system management o fault tolerant distributed computing o protection o naming o distributed file systems o data consistency o concurrency control o performance o formal methods and standards The course will consist of a mixture of lectures and interactive group discussions. The lecturers are: Ken Birman, Cornell University, USA Andrew Herbert, Advanced Networked Systems Architecture, UK Sape Mullender, Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science, NL Roger Needham, Cambridge University, UK Mahadev Satyanarayanan, Carnegie Mellon University, USA Mike Schroeder, DEC Systems Research Center, USA Alfred Spector, Carnegie Mellon University, USA Bill Weihl, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA The course is intended for graduate students and faculty, researchers and system designers from universities and industry. A basic knowledge of computer organization, operating systems and computer networks will be assumed. The number of participants is limited, and applications will be treated first-come first-serve. The deadline for registration is April 1st, with a late booking date May 15th (for a higher price). The cost of the course, including material and lunches, is Nkr 6000 (~ $900) (Nkr 3000 (~ $450) for students). Accommodation including breakfast is available for Nkr 225 (~ $35) p.p. in a double room, or Nkr 375 (~ $60) in a single room. A limited number of scholarships is available for university stu- dents. The deadline for application for one of these scholarship is March 1st. Tromsoe is located on an island in north Norway well inside the arctic circle. The midnight sun is visible from mid-May until the end of July. Temperatures are between 10 and 20 Celcius in July.
