                  CALL FOR PAPERS AND REFEREES

HAWAII INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SYSTEM SCIENCES - 22

                 Workstation Operating Systems

            KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII - JANUARY 3-6, 1989

The Software Track of HICSS-22 will contain a special set of
papers focusing on several topics in the area of Work-
station operating systems. The advent of high-performance
workstations and local networks has significantly changed
design considerations and requirements of operating systems.
Workstations provide a powerful hardware base typically con-
sisting of 1-16 Mbytes of memory, mapped-memory graphics
display, local network interface, and local disks.

Good performance, clean semantics, heterogeneity and porta-
bility are some of the important design considerations of
the various components of a workstation operating system. In
addition, policy issues such as autonomy versus sharing,
global scheduling of processes, have presented new chal-
lenges to the operating system designer.

Design of an operating system using a workstation hardware
base can be thought in terms of protocol design for the
basic components such as communications, naming,
input/output and graphics support. Papers are invited that
present conceptual ideas, describe design viewpoints, and
report experiences relating to workstation-based operating
systems. The presentations will provide a forum to discuss
new advances. Submissions are solicited in various topics
  such as:

o Communication protocols for a network of single and
      multi-processor workstations

o Graphics and user-interface support and protocols

o Naming and I/O protocols (including file systems)

  o Support for heterogeneity

o Policy issues (e.g. autonomy versus resource sharing)

The papers selected for presentation will appear in the Con-
ference Proceedings which is published by the Computer
Society of the IEEE. HICSS-22 is sponsored by the Univer-
sity of Hawaii in cooperation with the ACM, the Computer
Society, and the Pacific Research Institute for Information
  Systems and Management (PRIISM).

  INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING PAPERS
Manuscripts should be 22-26 typewritten, double-spaced pages
in length. Do not send submissions that are significantly
shorter or longer than this. Papers must not have been
previously presented or published, nor currently submitted
for journal publication. Each manuscript will be put
through a rigorous refereeing process. Manuscripts paper
should have a title page that includes the title of the pa-
per, full name of its author(s), affiliation(s), complete
physical and electronic address(es), telephone number(s)
and a 300-word abstract of the paper.

  DEADLINES
  o A 300-word abstract is due by March 30, 1988
o Feedback to author concerning abstract by April 15, 1988
o Six copies of the manuscript are due by June 6,
o Notification of accepted papers by September 1,
o Accepted manuscripts, camera-ready, are due by Oct. 3, 1988
