[news.announce.conferences] CFP 17th Applied Imagery Pattern Recognition Workshop

dml@esl.UUCP (Denis Lynch) (06/02/88)

SPIE Announces the Seventeenth Workshop on
		 APPLIED IMAGERY PATTERN RECOGNITION

			November 2 - 4, 1988
Cosmos Club, 2121 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington D.C.

The Seventeenth AIPR Workshop is sponsored by the SPIE and the Rome Air
Development Center. This AIPR meeting continues the past emphasis on the
practical use of image pattern recognition and the need for expanded
industry-government-university interaction. The Seventeenth Annual
Workshop will focus on the theme:

			  VISUAL REASONING

The proliferation of high-speed computation engines and the high potential
payoffs of automatic image understanding systems has led to an increasing
number of systems for machine vision, automatic target recognition, target
tracking, change detection and object identification. Most of these
systems are based on ad-hoc techniques that work in limited laboratory
circumstances. The difficulty of applying these non-robust techniques to
real world situations is enormous. Before any vision system can be
deployed in a defense or life-critical role its reliability and
limitations must be thoroughly understood. Both of these considerations
call for a high degree of rigor in defining, characterizing and validating
system performance.

Recent academic work has resulted in approaches to parts of the image
understanding process that are based on detailed theoretical analysis,
including regularization, photogrammetry-based vision, and evidence
combination. The focus of this year's Workshop is the practical
application of these theoretical advances. Of special interest are papers
describing existing systems in which a significant component is based on
an identifiable theoretical model.

This year's conference will also include a classified session conducted
under the auspices of the Rome Air Development Center. It will focus on
military applications of image pattern recognition.

Presenters in industry, government and universities are invited to submit
abstracts relevant to the above theme and the following topic areas:

Image Formation Processes and Phenomenology
Image Models
Imaging Geometry
Object Models (2D and 3D)
Motion Models and Constraints
Reasoning in Image Understanding
Reasoning Under Uncertainty
Combining Visual Evidence

AUTHOR'S APPLICATION

Author's application (below) and abstracts are due 1 August 1988. Since
abstracts will be distributed at the workshop, they should be submitted in
finished form ready for duplication. Abstracts for the classified session
must be unclassified. All abstracts should be typed, single-spaced on 8
1/2 by 11 inch paper with the title, author, affiliation and telephone
number centered at the top. Authors of accepted papers will be notified
by 1 August 1986. Although written papers are not required, presenters are
encouraged to distribute copies of their papers at the workshop. Please
indicate your intention on the application. Presentations will be limited
to 25 minutes including a 5 minute discussion period. For due date
extensions or questions please contact Denis Lynch.
