     International Workshop on Industrial Applications
	 of Machine Intelligence and Vision(MIV-89)

		   Roppongi, Tokyo, Japan
		     April 10-12, 1989

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

International Workshop on	Industrial Applications of
Machine Intelligence and Vision will be held in Tokyo, April
10-12, 1989. The Workshop is co-sponsored by IEEE Industrial
Electronics Society, and IIS (Institute of Industrial Sci-
ence, University of Tokyo). This is a follow-on interna-
tional	workshop to the successful 1st workshop held in
February 1987 at the same place.

The purpose of the Workshop is to stimulate interna-
tional exchange and discussions on the two key technologies,
"AI" and "Vision", for building tomorrow's industrial	sys-
tems and society. As seen in the title of the workshop, we
emphasize advanced AI and Vision technologies applicable to
industrial problems. Topics of interest include:

 * Foundations for AI and Vision Systems
Knowledge Representation and Inference, Spatial Reason-
ing, Vision Algorithms, Learning and Knowledge Acquisi-
     tion, New-Generation Programming,	Cooperative/Parallel
     Processing, etc.

 * AI Technologies in the fields of
     Expert Systems (Diagnosis,	Planning/Scheduling,
Design), CAD, Control Systems, Robotics, Office Automa-
     tion, Human Interface, etc.

 * Vision Technologies in the fields of
     Pattern Information Processing,	Factory Automation,
Robotics, Multi-Media Database, Human Interface, etc.

 * Hardware Architectures for AI and/or Vision Systems
     Realtime/Parallel	Hardware, Dedicated Processor, AI
     Computers, etc.

 * Advanced Environments for AI and Vision Systems

All presentation will be in English. Presentations at
the Workshop will be considered for publication in the IEEE
Transactions on Industrial Electronics.

Those who are working in the above fields	are invited
to submit an	800-word summary of their work. The summary,
which may include figures, must be informative, since the
paper will be selected on the basis of the summary. Four
copies of the summary should be mailed before November 21,
1988 to:

Acceptance of papers will be notified by December 20,
1988.	Authors of accepted papers will receive an author's
kit for the paper to be published in the Workshop Proceed-
ings.	The paper, which is	6 pages at maximum, must be
received by February 10, 1989.
