What is UNIX?
Besides being the most talked about operating system yesterday,
today and tomorrow, the UNIX operating system is unsurpassed in
providing buyers and users of multiuser systems with freedom of
choice in software applications hardware. With its portability,
the UNIX system spans the range of hardware systems from micro,
supermicro, minicomputers, superminicomputers, workstations,
minisupercomputers, mainframes and supercomputers. In providing
one single, compatible operating environment, UNIX satisfies a
market need that has gone unfulfilled by vendor proprietary
operating systems. It is the combination of these key features
-vendor independence, connectivity, and portability- that makes
the UNIX environment the multiuser operating system of choice
for developers, users and vendors alike.
About the Event

Session Chair - Jim Bound, DEC
Subject to be discussed are:
1. The Standards Process
2. Standards in the UNIX environment
3. Networking in the UNIX environment
4. Graphics in the UNIX environment
These conferences will include discussions of various
UNIX standards like POSIX, SVID, OSF, NFS, TCP/IP,
OSI, X-Windows, GKS and PHIGS
Performance & Benchmarks I - 1:30 - 3:00 pm
Performance & Benchmarks II- 3:30 - 5:00 pm
Session Chairs - Sharan Kalwani
Many of the "hottest" hardware configurations on the
market today run UNIX as their native operating system.
This panel will examine the different criteria used for
evaluating performance and benchmarking systems.
Sophisticated users will discuss how they plan for systems
and various configurations while maintaining an eye at the
bottom line.
Health Care - 3:30 - 5:00 pm
Session Chair - Ron Smith, MSE
This session will cover health care related applications in
the UNIX environment. These applications include
automations in a hospital environment, medical laboratory,
doctors' office, and diagnostic related applications. This
session will demonstrate the uses of UNIX in common health
care environments.
C o n f e r e n c e s
Wednesday, September 13, 1988
Database Product Overview - 9:00 - 10:30 am
Session Chair - Sheldon Hamburger, MSE
This session features presentations by database vendors, including
Informix, Unify, Oracle, Ingres, and Progress. These vendors will
each give brief presentations regarding their products, overview
of capabilities and features, and future directions. This session
will provide a general overview of the popular database products
which are currently available in the UNIX environment.
Database Application Overview - 11 -12:30 pm
Session Chair - Sheldon Hamburger, MSE
This session will present real life uses of database products
in the UNIX environment. Users and system developers will present
their views of unique applications of database technology within
the UNIX environment. These applications include large databases,
online transaction processing and distributed databases. This
session will provide an overview of the types of applications
which can be developed with the database products in the UNIX
environment.
Computer Integrated Manufacturing, CIM I - 1:30 - 3:00 pm
Session Chair - J.T. Vogt, Prime Computer
Introduction to communication standards in the factory and office
environments. Problems and solutions will be discussed with
final emphasis os the OSI model. This discussion is a "beginners
guide" to automation communications.
Computer Integrated Manufacturing, CIM II - 3:30 - 5:00 pm
Session Chairs - J.T. Vogt, Prime Computer
A follow-up to CIM I, this discussion centers on the problems
and solutions, successes and failures of several OSI
implementations including MAP, TOP and token ring. Attention
will be given to data transfer standards including FTAM and
MMS.

Essentials of UNIX System-V System Administration
Rebecca Thomas - Tech Valley Publishing
System-V UNIX (Berkeley UNIX, Xenix general principals)
200 pages of material. Targeted to administrators, not
system programmers. Attendees are expected to have an
intermediate user-level knowledge of UNIX and be able to
read simple Bourne Shell scripts.
Introduction to C Programming
Ray Swartz - Berkeley Decision Systems
These courses are designed for experienced programmers
who wish to learn the C programming language as well as
those familiar with C who want to learn more about it.
All aspects of the C language are introduced and explained
before being demonstrated in a working C program.
Further, programming examples are developed into full
applications so attendees can see how C programming
is really done. Every attendee receives a course booklet
that includes class notes, program listings, exercises
and solutions.
This course is split into two days. Day 1 covers those
features of C required to write C programs. Day 2 covers
C's program development features. When taken together,
Days 1 & 2 provide a complete introduction to the C
programming language.
Introduction to Shell Programming
Don Frabutt - MetaTech Inc.
The shell can be more than the UNIX system's command interpreter,
it can serve as a rich and powerful programming language. This
one day tutorial will provide the user with the ability to
understand and use the wealth of application processes and
commands available. Course content covers: running shell programs,
how to use positional parameters, built in shell variables,
effective use of control flow statements, conditional tests, and
trapping error signals. Course pre-requisites: an introductory
level knowledge of UNIX as well as some background in a high
level programming language.

UUCP Data Communications
Rebecca Thomas - Tech Valley Publishing
Installing, using and maintaining the three major versions
of UUCP: System Version 2, HoneyDanBer and 4.3BSD.
150 pages of material. Attendees are expected to have an
intermediate user-level knowledge of UNIX and be able to
read simple Bourne Shell scripts.
Advanced C Programming
Ray Swartz - Berkeley Decision Systems
See also the description of day one.
This course is split into two days. Day 1 covers those
features of C required to write C programs. Day 2 covers
C's program development features. When taken together,
Days 1 & 2 provide a complete introduction to the C
programming language.
UNIX (BSD) Administration
Sharan Kalwani
The basics of administering a UNIX system will be covered.
The tutorial will be oriented mainly towards Berkeley Software
Distribution (4.3 and 4.2) VAX UNIX systems. Topics covered
will include system startup, shutdown, resource management,
performance and tuning, the BSD fast file system, security, as
well as other topics. This tutorial is designed for systems
administrators, not system programmers. A rudimentary knowledge
of UNIX is assumed.
Relational Data Base Design
Don Frabutt - MetaTech Inc.
Relational databases require a fresh approach to the design
process. Batch file logic doesn't work. This one day tutorial
provides an overview of relational databases and how they
function. The tutorial provides the student with an understanding
of relational design terminology, the basics of data modelling,
and how they normalize data. In addition, the twelve keys of
distributed database design will be reviewed along with the
developing relationship between effective database design and
artificial intelligence.
