The Toronto local Siggraph group will be meeting July 24th at the U of T. in Room 1101, Sir Sandford Fleming Building, 10 Kings College Rd. at 8 pm. Demetri Terzopoulos, University of Toronto, will speak on DEFORMABLE MODELS. ABSTRACT: Deformable models offer a powerful approach to representing nonrigid shapes and motions in computer graphics, computer vision, and computer-aided design. In addition to free-form geometry, the formulation of these models involves physical principles that govern rigid and nonrigid dynamics. The physical basis of deformable models provides significant advantages over conventional, geometric modeling techniques, facilitating difficult animation tasks and supporting interesting user interaction scenarios via simulated forces. In this talk Demetri will review past work on deformable models, including the use of elastic, inelastic, and thermoplastic behaviors for deterministic and stochastic shape modeling, physically based animation, and shape reconstruction from images. He will also highlight several recent developments; among them: (1) adaptive meshes, (2) generalized formulations combining local and global deformations, (3) facial modeling, animation, and facial image analysis using deformable models. Our policy is that the meetings at U of T will be open to everybody. If you've enjoyed the events we've arranged so far, please be prepared to bring your membership up to date at this meeting. The third issue of the newsletter will be available at this meeting. See you there! -- Tom Burns, aka "The Video Guy" at: | "Ebben ne'andro lontana" - La Wally Alias Research Inc.
