		Second International Workshop on
	     Artificial Intelligence and Statistics
			January 4-7, 1989
		  Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA
The workshops on Artificial Intelligence and  Statistics  aim  to
bring  together	 researchers  in AI and statistics to broaden the
flow of information between the fields.	 The goal is to encourage
interdisciplinary  work,  which	 research to date has found to be
fruitful, between the two fields.  The Workshop includes one  day
of  tutorials and three days of single session research presenta-
tions.	Attendance is not limited.  The language is English.

			    Tutorials
			    January 4
     Four tutorials  are  scheduled  sequentially  for	about  90
minutes each:

			 Poster Sessions
     Poster sessions will be held to allow attendees  to  discuss
further presentations accepted for the Workshop.

			  Publications
     Advance papers will be printed for all  participants  regis-
tering before December 1, 1988.	 A surplus will be printed to ac-
commodate on site registrants, available on a  first  registered,
first  served  basis.  The papers will be refereed and revised to
produce a volume of papers in the Annals of Mathematics	 and  Ar-
tificial Intelligence as the permanent record of the Workshop.

			    Functions
     Lunches at poolside, in the hotel's garden, and on the beach
are  included in the registration fees.	 For other meals you will
be on your own at area restaurants.  Beverage service for morning
and  afternoon breaks is also included.	 A reception will be held
January 4, from 8:00 p.m. til 11:00 p.m.

			     Lodging
     A block of rooms has been reserved through December 1 at the
beach front Bahia Mar Hotel, 801 Seabreeze Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale,
FL, 33316, USA; Telex: 514569, Fax: (305)524-6912.  The rooms are
available  for	the  special  Workshop rate of $75 per night (+9%
tax), single or double occupancy.  (You	 must  arrange	your  own
roommate  if  you  want	 to  share a room.) Reservations for this
block of rooms must be received by December 1, 1988.   After  De-
cember 1, you must make your own room arrangements.  (Mention the
Workshop in any correspondence with the hotel to get the Workshop
rate.)

			 Transportation
     There are	international  airports	 in  Miami  and	 in  Fort
Lauderdale, located about 30 and 10 minutes respectively from the
conference site.  Both have regularly scheduled limousines  which
go  to	hotels	in  Fort Lauderdale.  Taxi service from the Miami
airport costs about $30, the limousine is $11.50.  The hotel pro-
vides parking at no charge for registered guests.

			  Registration
     You can register in advance by sending the attached form  to
Daryl Pregibon by December 1, 1988.  Please do not mail registra-
tions after that, as they may  be  lost	 or  delayed  in  holiday
mails.	Advanced registrations will be acknowledged by mail.  You
can also register at the  Workshop,  but  the  fees  are  higher.
Separate registration fees are required for the tutorials and for
any part of the research presentations.	 Registration fees at the
Workshop will be $125 for the tutorials and $150 for the research
presentations.	Discounts are available	 for  early  registration
and  for  students registering early.  Fees must be paid by check
or money order payable to SAIAS in US dollars.	To qualify for	a
refund of registration fees, notification of cancellation must be
received by December 1, 1988.  A cancellation charge of $20  will
be withheld from refunds.
