***** Hi-Def: Politics, Economics, and Technology ***** On November 20th, John Amanatides will answer the question: What is happening with HDTV? As always, the odd-month meetings are open to the public and free of charge. Please join us in Room 2101, Sandford Fleming Building, U. of T. 10 Kings College Rd. at 8 pm. ABSTRACT Because of recent DARPA funding, and the FCC requests for proposals regarding a terrestrial broadcast system for HDTV, there is a great deal of activity in research centres across the US. In the talk, he will look at the history of HDTV, what is currently happening and what we can expect. He will also look at the technical problems involved in coming up with a practical HDTV system as well as the political and economic factors surrounding the development of such a system. Using an HDTV console for a graphics workstation would likely bring the price of both down as a standard contributes economies of scale to two traditionally captive markets. Mirroring the merging of video and computers at the consumer level, will we see a similar blending at the broadcast/workstation level? Hi-Def may be the answer.....
